Wow, thanks surfaca, wooza, Jake & Tony! I'm really honored.

For me, it's all about the two Franks: Frankie Blandino (the Fathoms) and Phantom Frank Gerritsen (the Treble Spankers & the Phantom Four). They both consistently blow me away with their melodies and arrangements. Too many songs by each to list.... And there are many others, too....

Ship Song - Nick Cave
Ruby's Arms - Tom Waits
How Soon is Now - The Smiths
God Only Knows - The Beach Boys

And loads of others.

Surfwise there are quite a lot of Bambi Molesters and Slacktone pieces I wish I'd come up with and numerous others too .. but its easier to pick out a few quickly with vocal songs.

We are going there. Technically surf songs aren't even songs since songs must include words for it to be considered a song. If it were musical pieces then we might be in trouble non-surf wise.

Since when does a song have have stupid lyrics to be considered a song? Whack HAVE YOU LOST YOUR FREAKIN' MIND?

Dude, dictionary.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/song

I'll try to limit it to five. And I'll fail, so I'll at least try to limit it to surf/instro.

Ventures - "Journey to the Stars," & "He Never Came Back"
Dave Myers & the Surftones - "Gear"
Crossfires - "Fiberglass Jungle" & "Out of Control"
Atlantics - "Bombora" & "War of the Worlds"
Satan's Pilgrims - "Creature Feature"
Sharp Five - "Golden Guitar"
Freddy King - "San-Ho-Zay"
Surf Coasters - "Intruder" & "Last Train"
Pollo Del Mar - "Dripping Springs, TX"
Jim Messina & the Jesters - "Yang Bu" (yes, I know it's heavily derivative of "The Wedge" which is heavily derivative of "The Rising Surf." I don't care.)
Rumblers - "Boss"

And "Into the Void," "Snowblind" and "Hole in the Sky." Oh, and both "Psychotic Reaction"s. And both "Ace of Spades." And ...

-Warren

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

The Wailers' Hang Up or the Danger Diabolik soundtrack.

An alternate meaning from the Webster's dictionary:

4: a distinctive or characteristic sound or series of sounds

Embrace the exceptions! Laughing

Back on topic; so many great songs I wish I had written, here are but a few, in no particular order:

Squad Car
Operacion 69
I Fought The Law (And The Law Won)
Pretty Vacant
Tommy Gun
Sleepwalk

...and so many more...

Surf songs certainly are not even songs. They are odd songs.

"Hello Girls!"

I call them songs, I'm just saying that a song is called a song because you sing in it. The word song doesn't not originate when music was created.

"Son of Mr. Green Genes", i mean c'mon Zappa was a great Composer and this song proves it, i wish i could say it was my song, all those instruments all over the place very well arranged, the time signature changes ahh its one of my top Zappa songs, of course a lot of the credit also goes to the musicians who had to deal with an asshole like him haha, some might think this is just another 10+ minute Zappa Jam but listen to it closely and u'll hear what im talking about! That Whole Album is out of this world.

Smile Lately I've been listening to some Jazz. And one song in particular that I really like is "In a Sentimental Mood" by Duke Ellington w/John Coltrane. Such a wonderful tune. You can listen to it here http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7521560 And another song is "Round About Midnight" the Thelonius Monk version, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDL3gsNzli4 I'm not sure if its his song, but it's great. I'm learning to play it on guitar 8).

Abe, that entire album is just incredible. It showcases some of Coltrane's most powerful balladry ever captured on record IMHO. Also, Duke plays some very subtle and deep piano on that record (reminds me a bit of Bill Evans in some places.) Also check out John Coltrane w/ Johnny Hartman (vocals) for another side of Coltrane.

Smile Yeah, the whole album is great. Although I haven't heard of that Coltrane w/ Johnny Hartman album, I'll look into it though. Ryan ever listen to Thelonious Monk? "Monk's Dream" is great, another Jazz album that's really good is "Countdown: Time in Outter Space" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, I kinda know "Castillian Blues" on Piano Cool

Yeah, I've got a ton of Monk. My favorite Monk is probably his classic Blue Note and Riverside sides: Misterioso, Monk's Mood, Ruby My Dear, etc... His Columbia stuff is great as well. The Thelonius Monk with John Coltrane on Riverside is a MUST have.

Yeah I've heard Monk w/Coltrane. My lil'bro has a live album with both of them. I'm not sure what it's called, but they play Epistrophy 2 times.
