Hey there. I'm newly turned onto SB101 (via Danny--hello!) and wanted to start my maiden post by adding to this thread.
I have to say this is one of my all time favorites--Siboney by Johnny Fortune. I'm a surf music sax player, so any tune with some horns almost automatically gets my vote. But honestly, this song (and I was familiar with the original composer thanks to my classical music loving father) has the mystery, the darkness and the exotic vibes that I live for in instro tunes.
I'm glad to be here and look forward to some great finds. I'll have to check out the other versions listed above, by the Hellbenders and the Vara-Tones.
Also, a noob question: Is there a separate section of the forum to discuss instrumental, yet non-surf, related music? I am a HUGE fan of late '50s, early '60s R&B instros a la comps like Frolic Diner, Las Vegas Grind!

Johnny Fortune did a great version, though I don't know if his was the first "surf" cover or not.
If you haven't heard it...

The Goofyfoots added it to our set list a few months ago....just need to add a sax and trumpet player to the line-up... which is what I have wanted to do for years!
and it's the B-side of this...

...which Jeff Utterback should like... cool, snappy drums and drag racing!

Hi Lear welcome to SG101, finally a sax player on the forum. There's some interesting threads that mention sax, you'll get a laugh for sure. Speaking of which, there's a member named Jake, I urge you not to take him too seriously, he's actually a nice guy with a warped sense of humor.
In the same vein as this Johnny Fortune cover, is Al Casey's cover of Jezebel, I think the sax is pretty amazing on that as well.

My favourite version of Siboney is by the Mustangs (Finland). It's pretty uptempo.

This thread is a great companion piece for the exotica/surf thread. Although not really exotica, Cuban composer Ernesto Lacuona's compositions were covered many times on exotica and surf recordings. As you know he wrote Siboney, Malaguena and The Breeze and I. If you're feeling brave and up to the challenge, listen to his other original piano compositions on "Lecuona plays Lecuona". Some of his other powerful, melancholy tunes would make great Surf instros with the right arrangement.

Likewise, Ferenc.
Danny, I liked the recommendation. Never heard of Al Casey, but I liked the sample and immediately got it off iTunes! Keep 'em coming.
I'll look into the exotic thread Shivers mentioned, but I'm afraid it'll lead me into an endless abyss in cyberspace!

I think Johnny Fortune's Lone Surfer is also essentially Siboney. I like that one, too! And, in case nobody norticed the cross street at the SG101 2009 site:

Incidentally, Canto Siboney (song in the Siboney style) is named ultimately for the Ciboney Indians of Cuba. But the immediate source is probably the town of Siboney in Cuba, and the district around it, which is, I think, a famous one in terms of Cuban music. Also, if you're out there, Jeff, there is a town near Siboney named Daiquiri. I'm not sure, but ...
Anyone remember the old joke with the punch line (hmm, punch) "It's a hickory daiquiri, doc"?
