I've been listening a lot to the Lively Ones lately and I'm totally digging on the sax sound. I know this subject has been somewhat discussed before, but the posts in the past have never quite sufficiently addressed this question: what modern surf bands have a saxaphone player in the band? Not just for a song here or there, but a full-time saxaphonist. Can we get posts just on band names as opposed to the merits of including a sax, which has apparently already been covered?

Great thread. Please do list the modern bands with full-time sax. It would be a huge help to me.

man that a hard one:the only one that come to mind are the elliminators and the fathoms these days i think poeple miss the whole point with the sax it use be more of a dance hall band thing and these days people don't know how to do those fun dances any more now they just stand around with there arm folded.

The surf beat just doesn't get people moving anymore these days. It's quite amazing there has only been one dance craze of my generation. That would be the macarena of course. Which was retarded. And probably put people off of doing predetermined dances forever.
And back to people not dancing to surf. Compared to the 60s, surf is relatively tame compared to music people dance to these days. The beats today or more complex and consist of inorganic sounds that people seem to like more. Although I am hardly a dance I definitely get into some 'modern' music more than surf.
Lots of people will hate this. But I get into it. I hated it at first myself. Took me several years to come around to it. I was going to post something a little more dancy but this song has sax. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0mtSjQvk3o&feature=related

Here is a great example of what The Eliminators do. This is Bill Swanson on sax.

I saw a lot of people pogo-ing and moshing at the Trashwomen/Thee Cormans/etc. gig at Mr. T's Bowl in Los Angeles. Wish it was more of an actual dancing routine, but it was still cool to feel so much excitement on the floor. Folded arms not allowed that night.

I got kind of put off of sax by the likes of Michael Bolton and others and I play sax myself. I guess it was the overproduced jazz lite aspect. But I do still love the raunchy old school style. A good example is the Premiers "Firewater". Not exactly surf but in the instro category for sure.

Not a modern band, but The Sentinals used a gritty sax sound pretty effectively.

I wish more modern surf bands used a saxophone.
I feel that it makes the music seem a little less pretentious, and a little more accessible - I don't know why.

I thought about Impala, but wasnt sure if the sax member was full time, or just on some songs.

Kind of Pre Surf but the Revels had a smoking sax player. I agree with everyone that 80s "smooth jazz" sax solos almost killed it for me.
Suprisingly there seem to be few sax guys at least in Phoenix.
Horn players seem to be serious bunch.
