This might be interesting to some of you.
See this clip from YouTube of Raat Se Kaho Ruke Zaraa. I believe the vocalist (dubbed) is Lata Mangeshkar. The movie is a 1965 Bollywood production Lutera (also spelled Lootera). The music directors for the film were the famous Indian duo Laxmikant(h)-Pyarelal (or Laxmi-Pyare).
You may think you recognize this song, and you would be right. Apparently Bollywood music producers were somewhat given to borrowing back in the day.
I also found an interesting mention about this song in RMIM, by Pyarelal himself. To a question, "And 'Raat se kaho ruke zara' from 'Lootera'?", he says, "That was Laxmi's chaar-sau-beesi! He said it was his own tune. Later I met Shammi Kapoor who casually asked me if the tune was lifted, and I rose to Laxmi's defence and argued about it. Later Laxmi sheepishly admitted that he had taken it from a western tune!"
I have no idea what the movie is about or what lutera or raat se kaho ruke zaraa means!

Thank you! I appreciate it a lot. Another opportunity for me to stretch how wide the influences on vintage early 1960s surf used to be.

I love Bollywood stuff! I can't follow the music or story, but the dancing and music are great!

Then check this one out! Looks like the same scene, dramatically speaking, from a different movie. Maybe the song would make a good surf song.

In a more serious vein, how is the exotic sounding Misirlou perceived in India?
It's a Western-sounding cabaret song.
