I didn't do anything but discuss the book, surfing and music! I've learned my lesson.
But you didn't learn enough of a lesson. Brian wasn't speaking to you. What you did in this response is act like a dog who feels he deserves a treat by sitting when asked.
Nah, I just kind of expected to get chewed out.

I also like to think that all early 60's fender equipment is happy to be playing surf music again. After all, its the music it was meant to play.

Kman1, I wasn't talking to you, but you were way off-topic. Please, try to stay on-topic. Please go to the shallow end to stray off-topic (or to poke each other in the chest).

Zak make a valid point re: the "novelty factor"..though the retro part is fun for me also. Anyway, went and ordered a copy of the book off ebay 27 bucks..I resisted for awhile as that is the era that I grew up in..had my first surf band in the mid 60's....should be a good read...

The whole package means the following:
haircut, shoes, attitude, off-stage behavior, onstage behavior, vocabulary, record collection, board length - you get the picture?
I thought most people grew out of playing dress-up/make-believe by the age of 10.
I dont think you get what johnny wanted to say. Dont dress-up, live it!

For example: if you have long hair, people will think you are usually into another style and this Surf stuff is only a little sideline.

So apparently I haven't followed the existence and publication of this book. Is it entirely about surf music or does it just mention the music as a subset of the '60's California culture? What's the deal?

Yeah, it would definitely be great if more bands today actually "lived it" a little bit more besides just playing the music, but I can understand it's not for everyone.

Amazon product description:
From original beachcomber personalities like the Waikiki Beachboys to the rise of Venice Beach as a creative center for music, art, and film, this insightful chronicle traces the roots of the surf boom and explores its connection to the Beat Generation and 1960s pop culture. Through accounts of key figures both obscure and popular, such as Mike Dormer, Rick Griffin, the Trashwomen, and the Beach Boys, the book illustrates why surf culture is a vital art movement of the 20th century. The entire spectrum of pop culture is covered, including discussions of the advent of surf magazines and the immense popularity of the beach movies starring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon.
I haven't got my copy yet but it should be here any day now.

"Live" a 45 year old fad?
Same damn thing.
Yep. "Living it" is a completely artificial construct - how are you gonna live like teenagers did in Southern California for a historical period of about 4 years??? Are you gonna ask your mommy and daddy before you take out the T-bird?? Are you gonna save your allowance all week to buy the new single by Eddie & the Showmen?? Are you gonna wear white Levis and huarache sandals living somewhere where winters exist and can get pretty cold? Really, it's complete bullshit. And I say, f*$# the bullshit. As much as Klas may be a dedicated afficinado of the entire lifestyle, he's most certainly NOT "living it" in Sweden as a middle-aged guy. I think the same most certainly applies to KK living in Germany, too. And I'd bet you it applies to Johnny Bartlett, too.
As Zak said, there are quite a few surf music fans that want this genre to remain a novelty. As far as I'm concerned, though I myself have a pretty idealized vision of the SoCal teenager lifestyle from '60 to '64, that's not what this is all about. It's about the music. All else is bullshit. Now, some people like bullshit. Good for them. Have a great time with that. But don't try to pass off such a narrow and ridiculous vision as THEE way to approach surf music.
Ugh....

Oh man! You guys gotta hear this great new band called the Beatles. They have the coolest haircuts and wear these great boots. I'm going sell my board to buy their records and get a Rickenbacker guitar and Vox amp.

Hey yeah I've heard of them. They are really good aren't they? Let's blow this joint, I'm trading in my Fender for a Vox amp. Let's all join the bandwagon

Jake and Abraham, you guys sure add a lot of value to the discussion. Just because kman runs amuck doesn't mean you have follow his lead.

If I may draw an analogy....Many a bluesman decided that you have to live the hard life to play the real blues. One of my all time favorite guitarists, Michael Bloomfield is a case in point..it cost him his life. Regarding the focus this thread has taken...really wtf...if you want to get into the vibe of the first wave era go for it..on the other hand if you feel the need to distance yourself from that and ride a different curl..more power to you....I don't see it as a problem.
