I've got a pretty nice set up I'll have to take a picture of. It's a lot of pedals, but I use all of them. I've got one of the big Gator pedalboards, with a LoopMaster switcher that gives me two separate loops, and the ability to combine them. It also has a bypass, and a tuner loop that I have going into one of those rectangular tuners that are grey and blue and the name escapes me (TS-12 maybe?).

Loop 1 is all my "rock" effects. In order from the guitar to the amp I've got an MXR Micro Amp, Digitech Whammy, Vox Wah, Boss Blues Driver, Big Muff, Micro Pog (with the rhythm circuit engaged on my Jag, with no distortion, I get such a cool pipe organ kinda sound with it), and Small Clone.

Loop 2 is for all my "surf" effects. Full Tone Supa Trem, MXR Carbon Copy, and Fender Reverb Unit.

This set up allows me to basically spice up my band's surf songs with the push of a button, as well as throw in surf style breaks to our more garage and punk sounding distorted numbers, without having to take tap dancing lessons.

I myself have an Univox Echo Delay (uses a real tape which inserts in the back of the box), old Univox Super Fuzz, Danelectro Distortion (it's red and only $20), DOD Chorus, Wawa Pedal (forgot name) and an old maestro phase shifter.

Now, to take this pedal subject even further to a pedal board. Did anybody here make their own pedal board or bought one. If you built your own, just curious which materials you used. Seems like a million different ways to build it. I want to make my own and have some ideas.

Wood, nails, break away hinges, latch, velcro, glue, and tolex.

For the moment I use a Boss pedal board, basically an injection molded piece built to fit their pedals. It's fine if you only have Boss pedals on your board but I would like to come up with something more versatile.

I think Jake nails it.

I don't really differentiate between boutique and mass produced. If it sounds good, it sounds good.

The same here. I go for the vintage option most of the time. I have tried shorter spring units out of curiosity and for Surf they are substitutes.

The Exotic Guitar of Kahuna Kawentzmann

You can get the boy out of the Keynes era, but you can’t get the Keynes era out of the boy.

A friend of mine who is a great cabinet maker, made a long rectangular box, looks like three or four tanks in a row, with Fender grillcloth / logo, that hinges down in the back with pedals mounted to the backside. These guys have some real vintage stuff, and the pedal board fits perfect. Check it out.

I finally got lazy with the bringing of so many individual pedals and the reliability problems and went for the "all in one" Boss ME 50 a couple of years ago. At the surf gigs, I only use it for the volume pedal, occasional delay and the tuner. The volume pedal is great because, unlike the guitar's volume control, you keep your tone. I use the other features for other types of gigs.

While its an-all-in one, it works like individual floor pedals. That means it has the knobs and you're not scrolling through menus and trying to figure out how to adjust parameters to suit each different performance situation. You can make the adjustments on the fly. The sounds are quite good...my subjective opinion of course.

Pedals? What's that?.............seriously, a Guyatone Mini delay right into the tank. Nuttin' fancy. It's a law of geometry: "The shortest distance between two points is a straight line."

Our surf forefathers thought that pedals went on bicycles..........I gotta admit, I agree...............ed

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

Yes, but that was before wormhole theory. Now the shortest difference between two points can be guitar -> board full of pedals -> amp, as long as you put a wormhole next to the tuner. Guitar

Yes, our surf forefathers thought pedals belonged on bicycles but I don't believe that was so much preference as it was the fact that 1st wave players didn't have many guitar pedals available to them. By the time such Halloween goodies did become available, the Brits had taken over and instro surf was ancient history. Many of our surf fore-fathers were quite attracted to the pedals when they assimilated to their later '60's outfits.

Check out the Chantay's today and you'll hear Ricky layin' on the distortion and other effects. Sure he's not an original Chantay but the original members in the band aren't complaining. And they get major enthusiastic crowd response when Ricky does the speedy fancy distortion driven stuff.

OK, I'm only half not-joking, but I find after a couple weeks with a new pedal I always end up unplugging it and just running the guitar into the amp. I do have a couple new toys that I consider keepers, though:

The Magnavibe is a great little hand built pedal by Bigfoot FX that is based on the Magnatone Vibrato. Even though the Maggie amps have a tube driven Vibrato, this thing really comes close to duplicating the signature Maggie Vibrato slope and tone and has a tremolo in it as well.
The Fuzzmite is covered in another recent thread, with the added tone control it's friggin' great. The other pedal is a Throbak Stonebender, which is an update of the Colorsound MkII. Other than that, I have an old Crybaby Wah, MXR Phase 90 and for delay, a 25 year old Deltlab JR1050.

That's actually pretty much the case with me as well. I appreciate good pedals but in most cases I end up using a guitar, a cord and a tube amp, just like the founding fathers. Smile Yes, I believe it was Ben Franklin that said "give me a Jaguar and a place to plug it in and I'll be able to Rock the world". And no less than George Washington himself said . . . .

I use a Speed King mostly, although sometimes a DW 7000 or Camco chain drive - all are great, but the Speed King really gives that retro sound!

Cool Hey Jim, is it a Vintage Speed King? A friend of mine bought a 65 Club Date Ludwig and the guy who sold it to him threw in a bunch of other stuff. And it came with a vintage Ludwig Speed King, but it's not very good. It's one of those Direct Drive type pedals. But I'm just asking because my lil'bro was thinking about getting one of those.

The Deadbeats

Our drummer broke the speed king on our/his club date kit.

Yes, its a vintage Speed King. I haven't figured out how to break it. In fact, I usually use a DW 7000, mostly because it has a base plate that helps prevent the drum from moving around, but I always carry the Speed King around as a back up...which has come in handy, since a few things have broken over the years with the DW. I actually like the direct drive aspect of it.... no play for Mr Grey.

I go...guitar...Boss TR-2...MXR Carbon Copy...Tank...amp. I'm happy with my stuff. 90% of the time it's just guitar/tank/amp...but i do a few Duanne Eddy tunes so i need the TR-2 and i use the MXR for Shadows tunes and a couple Ventures tunes as well. I gotta keep it simple cause we get rained on and have to bail quickly. Cool
Kawentzmann....Mahalo for putting us on your map. That's pretty cool.
