Weeks after we played with the Surfcoasters, a fellow musician told me that the mike on my amp sounded like it was damaged. He knows the my tone well enough that he KNEW it was not my amp. On stage it sounded great. I wanted to post this to encourage folks that know something is wrong to speak up... I would rather know early on to try to fix the issue than to suck tone-wise.

Dude,
I know you posted this a long time ago, but I'll tell you it's a mixed bag. I've offered a "suggestion" to other bands after they soundcheck, and usually you get a head nod, but most of the time they don't change anything. Also, sometimes, and this is what usually happens, the gig has already started and it's hard to get the band's attention to have them change it. It's part of life as a gigging surf guitarist. Good luck, live and learn.

If you think getting the band's attention is impossible, try suggesting to the club's sound man that it's "lead guitar out front and roll back the kick drum," this ain't no disco.
The Penetrators had it figured out. Somewhere I saw an "cheat sheet" they did on how to mix a surf band......clever.

I think Eddie having a say on the board is going to be part of the negotiations when we play a certain hot spot in Atlanta again! WHEW!! BASS BASS BASS!! A cheat sheet is a WONDERFUL idea. I'll take a copy of that as well (in case you can't be there, Ed...haha)

I'll be happy to "man the board" for you guys anytime. I did pro sound for a number of years and I can say, I'm way better with a sound board than I am with a surf board................

I'm reminded of that Far Side cartoon, "Larry's last night as the band's sound technician," where he has his hand on the "suck" knob.

The Penetrators DVD has the chart of how surf music should be mixed.
