I found this at the Guitar Center webpage:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_squier_se100_electric_pack?full_sku=102003720

Is it a bad deal? I mean I dont want to buy this and the guitar be some cheepo thing. I am just trying to find a good way to start with an electic/surf guitar. I need an amp because I have always played acustic up until i wanted to start learning this style. So what do yall think?

It's a good beginner's package. Nothing wrong with it at all.
The guitar will have a decent tone and action. Eventually,
you'll want to upgrade if you stick with it, but it's what I would recommend for somebody just starting out on
a low budget.

Should I buy new strings if i buy this package?

that guitar probobly comes with .08 or .09 roundwounds, alot of surf guitarists prefer higher gauge flatwounds. i prefer .012 chromes which are pretty easy to find.

The one thing I will add is if you are getting used to the feel of a new guitar, it can be beneficial to start out with lighter strings. Since you have experience on an acoustic, it should be an easy jump, but at least play out the strings that came on it before worrying about swapping up.

Ok, I was doing some more snooping on the GC website and I found another package. Its $80 more and I need some expert opinions on what they think. So thanks in advance. Here is the link:

I 'm not sure what the differnece is between the guiatrs - I thought the affinity is actually the cheapest guitar they have BUT I AM NOT SURE!

chances are, you get a cheaper guitar with the other pack. affinity now has an alder body which would make it - in theory at least - considerably better then plywood or that very light stuff which is what I'd guess they'd use for the other one, if it is different.

what I'd do is simply mail or call MF and ask 'em what the exact differnce is between the guitars, and esp what wood the bodies are, and what kind of pick-ups are in it. it's easier than checking websites.

the frontman definitly will sound better then the other one, but not 80 bucks better, so it really depends on the guitar. check what the amp and guitar differneces in price are if you buy 'em alone.

my gut feeling says that the with that frontman, you'll enjoy playing the guitar a lot more, which is what it is all about anyway. the $80 differnce has to be justified by a better guitar too though.

btw, you'll still be wanting reverb though.

good luck!

I think this is the Strat Pack which used to sell in the music shop I worked in, and I remember those particular squires being pretty damn nice as far as all that goes. They played pretty smooth, and once you got them reasonably set up, made for a pretty nice guitar.

The one tip I will give, no matter what package you go with, is to buy a new chord immediately. The chords Fender puts in with their packs are abosolute crap. I fixed 80% in the first two months -- usually due to poor solders, and even when they worked right, they were painfully weak. So do yourself a favor and get any middle-of-the-road chord to go with that package, because you'll be needing it. I personally love the "Planet Waves" chords that D'Addario puts out, but really anything will work.
