Permalink New Gretsch Catalina Drum Pics & Short Review

New Topic

I just got this set of Gretsch, Catalina Club MOD drums last week, I would have to say to any drummer considering an excellent sounding and affordable drum kit, this is it. Right out of the box they sound great! My only recommendation would be changing the Evans G1 Heads, I should be receiving some REMOS from UPS today, they should sound even better. I also picked up an new Zildjian 21" "A" ride, and some "A" Hats, they cost more than the Catalina's.

This Kit includes the 22x20 BD and it is a powerhouse. Anyways here are some pics.

glad to hear you like it Tonetti

That's a beautious kit, Tonetti. I think that will be my next one. I have the smaller Gretsch Catalina with the 18x17 BD and it was great when I only had a Mustang to stuff it in but now I've got a mini-van and space is not a prob.

Where do you play that kit (location and with a band or home studio?)-Marty

I would highly recommend this kit, I am used to playing an old set of Sonor Hilites, I sold a few weeks ago, The Gretsch's sound is as good if not better, than the Sonors. Like I said the Evans G-1s that came with it arent my style, so I am putting on an Emperor X on the Snare, and Some Controlled Sound Clear black dots on the toms today. I was planning on swapping out the bass head as well, but the stock one sounds pretty nice. I'm sure it will be sounding even better tonight.

I just play in the Garage, I'm not in a band or anything, I havent really even played music since my kids were born, (8yrs or so) My Dad has been in a blues band for years, and we are planning on starting a surf band for fun. I used to play in a punk/thrash/whatever band when I was younger, playing Guitar, and later Drums. I still love punk rock, but I have really been getting in to surf lately. I have always liked surf/instrumental music, I just never really knew much about the Genre. This site has really helped me out though!! (Thanks Brian!)

Congrats on the new kit. I like the chrome lugs and rims much better than the black on the older catalina club kits. Do the staggered lugs distribute the shell tension better ? I love black diamond pearl. james

I picked this kit mainly for the reason of the vintage look, chrome lugs/diamond pearl finish, It really looks beautiful in person. I have heard that the staggered lugs dont make any difference, but I think it would be a fair assumption, that the shell may not be as stressed as a standard pattern, but as far as sound is concerned it is supposed to have no effect.
