Permalink I dig Phil Dirt

Everybody has an opinion. Opinions are the result of life's experiences.

Phil has been listening and participating in music for a very long time. With that kind of depth you are bound to have broader sense of what you feel is successful within it's own genre, sub genre or sub-sub genre.

On top of that we all just have different taste. You don't have to respect someone else's taste, that's part and parcel with any creative media.

And I respect anybody who puts major effort into their passions.

Phil has been very good to our collective "scene" and goes out of the way (first by his radio show and now by the web) to supply information about new music and old to anyone nutty enough to enjoy this "off the radar" music. He likes bands who have passion, humor, and conviction, and is not influenced by geographical snobbishness.

I just wanted to say I think we are a whole lot better off with him as a part of our music, than without.

It'd be awesome if we all liked what I like. I could tease people for not liking things as much as I do and for jumping on the bandwagon.

And Phil is great for the community. He doesn't have to like everything. Sure, I think he has given a low rating to some of the stuff I like but you should see how some records I count amongst my favorite are rated elsewhere.

The only thing I strongly disagree with him about is the Dubceks review. It is a really really bad record. 3 stars?

I agree!

I found surf music about two years ago by way of the Surf Coasters Live (Internet Archive edition). I had no idea this form of music was so historically deep, i'm only just starting put the pieces together now. I couldn't manage without Reverb Central.

Zak, start reviewing. And give us a 5 palm tree review! You can give the Dubceks a one flip-flop review.

I'll help you out.

I love this record from __. It has a really cool 60s (Surf/Hot Rod/Spaghetti Western) vibe. The playing is also top notch. Classic surf rock guitar that never gets old. My only issue with this record is the reverb, of which there is not enough! I hope we can see a lot more of . Try to see them live if you can when they are playing at __ in front of (5/10/15) people.

It would be cool if more people did reviews, (good or bad) in the review section of sg101, but they do take a fair amount of time to write, and it puts one at risk for a major flaming.

As a musician in a band who has just released a new disk, it's ironic (but consistent with our current society) that "music" from dubceks has gotten the lions share of attention... just for being bad. Confused

go figure.

Dirt is the first person to admit that his reviews are his opinions, they are not the last word. He likes what he likes, and writes about it. I certainly don't agree with all of his reviews, and think he missed out on some great third wave stuff, either through his dismissal of Lo-Fi, or by association. As a Bay Area guy, I truly miss his weekly show, and the whole scene suffers from his absence.
I think his web site was more accessible when he had his radio show, because he would play the music he reviewed, even if he didn't like it (and remember he once did a 3 hour special on Lo-Fi) so it was easier to formulate my own opinions. Now I read the reviews, and have to find the bands' music samples online- ugh, too much work! - to decide if it is something I want to buy. I have a box full of cassettes of his show dating back to 1993, which are still relevant today.

Looks like it is supposed to go into the CD tower, no USB.

All I can say is that I wish there were other sites like reverbcentral.com presenting an alternate opinion. I'm glad Phil Dirt is around doing what he does with such devotion, what bothers me is that there are quite a few people out there who take his word as gospel simply because he's the only one out there with a surf-specific review site of such magnitude.

I couldn't agree you more.As much as I like the guy,I feel he sometimes just doesn't get it.He's gave some losey reviews I thought were great, and vice versa.
I know there's people here that could give a refreshing new outlook on the instro world as we now know it.

Just run a line out from a tape deck into a line in on your sound card. No need for that thing.
