I am thinking of buying a new turntable, the one I have is a huge old wooden RCA thing, with a built in tape deck. it sounds good, but i'd like something a bit smaller, anybody have any suggestions. i am looking for quality as well as affordability.
Thanks in advance!!

Sony makes a model or 2, at least they did a few years back.
they were around 150.00 and 275.00 I think.
Radio shack usually has their Optimus model similar to the cheaper Sony Model.
of course they are not the greatest.
you could always step up to a Techniques for around 450 or so.
most djs use these.

ProJect makes great turntables that are a step-up from Technics, Numark, etc and their entry level model will cost about the same $$.

I would prefer a machine to convert mp3's into vinyl records!

Here's one place to start (and maybe get a little overwhelmed):

yikes,
I need to start saving up.
I want to upgrade from my cheapy sony turn table,
but that stuff is pricey.
but i heard that Neil Young, and Eddie Veder have 20,000 dollar turntables.
wonder if you can really hear the difference?

needledoctor isn't too bad.... as long as you stay in the budget section. seriously, why would anyone need a $20,000 turntable?
Makes me wonder how much that person would spend on the stereo overall.

How about 4000$ for a power lead then?

there are too many different turtables and biased opinions. Go to all of your local pawn shops, find one that looks good, go home and research it to make sure it doesn't suck, buy it. Don't pay out your nose for a new high-end turtable and don't pay too little for an el-cheapo USB turntable (most of them are despite the added convenience)

I have a couple of vintage Thorans that I really like but there are lots of used Duals out there which are a good buy...also the old Yamahas. For a new/newer table some times one owned by a DJ that never got his biz going can be a good buy.

I used to use a Stanton back when I played records. If I started playing them again I'd get another one.

A 20,000 TT must be set into a block of cement to prohibit any vibrations. You would also want to use a set of $1500 oxygen free lead cables to attach to your multi amp setup...don't forget the power conditioner as the electricity to your home is far to dirty to achive the ultimate sound

Good advice. I have a nice Pioneer PL-12D which I bought from a pawn shop for 250 kr ($35) some 15 years ago.

I have that same table - bought it new in the 70's. I've never stopped using it. I just put a new belt on it every year or so and it keeps on spinning! Lately it has a Grado green cartridge in it and sounds nice.

Has anyone used this turntable, pre amp and/or software?

For converting LPs to CDs, I have a nice 1970's era Pioneer direct drive turntable that I need to connect to my 1970's era Pioneer receiver/amplifier and then connect that to my computer and then use my "SonicStage Mastering Studio" that came with my VAIO.
The only drawback is that it takes up a bit of room and requires me to move the receiver from the garage to my home office when I want to do some converting.
PS- Thrift Stores, Pawn Shops and Yard Sales are the way to go...!
1970's Pioneer 250 watt receiver.......... $4.00 at a neighborhood yard sale (yes, 4)
1970's Pioneer direct-drive turntable... $20.00 at a Goodwill Thrift Store
...a new needle was the most expensive part!
