OK my spanish speaking friends. Is there anything I need to know in the spanish posts above that pertains to doing the podcast?
Would some of you like to put some spanish surf comps together for me and send them so I have some source material?
Thanks

I will do it!!! - ... if you leave me a few days to listen again to all spanish bands' records and put up a good compilation. But someone should also compilate bands from Argentina, Mexico etc.

Two more bands from Spain:
BORN LOSERS
These guys from Barcelona had a great style very near to Dave Allan & the Arrows. They had very good own songs and among their covers you can find Del Shannon's "Keep searching". They disbanded the last weekend after releasing two fantastic singles. Check them and see!!

From Madrid. If I am not wrong they just have a demo.

I also like to think that all early 60's fender equipment is happy to be playing surf music again. After all, its the music it was meant to play.

Mexico seems to have a huge surf music scene. Myspave lists 100 surf bands:
http://topartists.myspace.com/index.cfm?Mytoken=27EA246A-DD69-45A1-89B94642901E378E128189424&fuseaction=music.topBands&page=0&GenreID=48&Country=MX&state=&zip=&distance=0&localType=state&xargstringp=&xargstringn=&lastpagesent=1
Also, if you search for bands in Mexico just listing Los Straitjackets as an influence (I did it once but can't figure it out now) you get over 70 bands.

YES, HERE IN MEXICO THERE ARE MANY SURF BANDS, SOME OF THEM JUST KICK ASS LIKE LOST ACAPULCO, OR SR. BIKINI, LOS TWANGERS AND TWIN TONES (MORE WESTERN STUFF) UNFORTUNATELY I MIGHT SAY THAT THERE`S A LACK OF SENSE OF GOOD SURF INSTRO HERE IN MEXICO, MOST OF BANDS ARE FORMED BY TEENAGERS JUST FOR HAVING FUN (AND I THINK THAT'S GREAT) BUT, THEY MOSTLY PLAY BEACUSE ITS EASY AND THEIR SONGS HAVE SURF RYTHM, BUT NO MELODY AND NO REVERB (OR NOT AS MUCH AS IT SHOULD BE). I REALLY HOPE MEXICAN BANDS CAN OPEN THEIR EYES AND EARS TO BAND LIKE BAMBI MOLESTERS, BITCH BOYS, HUNTINGTON CAD .. ETC .. BEACUSE HERE IN MEXICO THEY ARE PRACTICALLY UNKNOWN.
It seems to be a huge scene and so it is .. but huge doesn't mean good.
That my opinion of the Surf Scene where I live.

tell them to listen to those bands you mentioned and try to write more melodic songs, and if they can't afford a reverb tank, sugges some sort of reverb pedal, no not as good, but better than nothing, IMO

It seems to be a huge scene and so it is .. but huge doesn't mean good.
That my opinion of the Surf Scene where I live.
Thanks, that was very informative! It also sheds a lot of light on just what makes up the scene you described, and looking at a lot of those myspace pages is further proof.
However, I suppose this is a case of how you define "good". Regardless of the music quality, there is something wonderful about this movement of kids in Mexico getting together today and playing, for kicks, surf music!
A few questions, por favor:
Do most of those kinds of bands wear luchador masks too?
Do they come from any particular parts of the country?
Are the bands from any particular economic class or is it pretty widespread?
I have seen video of Los Straitjackets and several other bands playing at the Mexico National Festival ("Vive Latina" I think is what it was called), in front of a massive, young, and wildly dancing crowd. I don't think we have anything even nearly comparable in the USA surf music scene.

YES, THAT'S MY POINT, I THINK IS GREAT THAT KIDS PLAY SURF MUSIC, IN MY PERSONAL HISTORY I STARTED PLAYING WHEN I WAS 16, NOW I'M 20 AND I'LL BE PLAYING UNTIL TEH DAY I DIE. AND I THINK IT IS A MATTER OF INFLUENCES, AS YOU SAID MEXICO'S SURF SCENE IS FULLY INFLUENCED BY LOS STRAITJACKETS AND LOST ACAPULCO, BOTH WEARING MEXICAN WESTLING MASKS, BOTH BANDS PLAYING IN MASSIVE CONCERTS LIKE "VIVE LATINO" AND IN "ZOCALO" FOR MORE THA 70.000 PEOPLE, BUT THAT'S WERE I DISAGREE ... INSPITE OF LOS STRAITJACKETS AND LOST ACAPULCO ARE REALLY GOOD BANDS, YOU CAN'T TELL THE PEOPLE IN A COUNTRY WHERE SURF MUSIC IS PRACTICALLY UNKNOW THAT LOS STRAITJACKETS AND LOST ACAPULCO ARE 100% SURF MUSIC AND ARE THE BEST OF TJHE GENRE, THEY HAVE SURF TUNES (GOOD ONES), BUY THEY ALSO MAKE ROCK AND ROLL, BALADS, GARAGE, ETC ...
WHAT I MEAN IS .. THAT I THINK IS GREAT THAT YOUNG PEOPLE PLAY SURF MUSIC, BUT THEY DON'T HAVE THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND HERE IN MEXICO TO SAY THAT WE HAVE A SCENE, BECAUSE MANY BANDS DON'T HAVE AN EXTENDED SOURCE OF INFLUNECE, THEY ARE ONLY INFLUENCED BY THE POPULAR BANDS LIKE LOS STRAIT AND LOST.
Do most of those kinds of bands wear luchador masks too?
YES THEY DO, MY BAND STARTED LIKE THIS BUT AS WE KNOW OTHER AMRICAN AND EUROPEAN BANDS WE DICIDED NOT TO DO IT ANYMORE, BECAUSE MANY OF THE LOCAL BANDS USE THEM .. IF YOU SAY SURF HERE IN MEXICO YOU INMEDIATLY THINK ABOUT WESTLING MASKS ... WHICH FOR EXAMPLE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SATAN'S PILGRIMS FOR EXAMPLE.
Do they come from any particular parts of the country?
MOST OF THE BANDS ARE FROM MEXICO CITY, THERE ARE OTHER IN PUEBLA OR LEON, BUT MOSTLY HERE IN THE CITY.
Are the bands from any particular economic class or is it pretty widespread?
WELL MOST OF THE PEOPLE HERE IN MEXICO IS POOR, BUT YOU CAN SAY THEY ARE ALL MIDDLE CLASS ... YOU CAN SEE IT REFLECTED IN THE GEAR, BECAUSE HERE IS VERY DIFFICULT TO GET A GOOD GUITAR FOR EXAMPLE A FENDER ONE, THEY ARE VERY EXPENSIVE AND IN THE WORST CASE THEY DON'T EXIST HERE .. FOR EXAMPLE IF YOU WANT A FENDER REVERB TANK .. YOU WILL NEVER FIND ONE IN ANY MUSIC STORE YOU VISIT.
THAT`S ALSO AN INTERESTING POINT .. HE RE IN MEXICO AND INSPITE THERE IS FACTORY IN ENSENADA FENDER GUITARS ARE A DREAM HERE IN MEXICO !!! HOW CAN YOY TELL WE HAVE A SURF SCENE IF THERE'S A LACK OF INFLUENCES AND GEAR.
