Permalink Setting Pickup Height

I should have read this thread years ago, I've just added a nice extra dash of brightness to my guitar in about 10 minutes flat, just by lowering the pickups.

I'm with you on this. Seems counterintuitive, but sometime it works. Just spent some time adjusting my Dipinto Galaxie 4. The neck only and bridge only sounds were perfect to start. Neck set rather low, bridge up quite high. The previous owner had "stepped" the middle two p/us down, splitting the height difference between bridge and neck. But the middle p/u selector choices sounded muddy, so I moved the middle two up and down. What works best is the middle two rather low on the bass side, a bit higher on treble. No more mud. Just by eyeballing it, I'd have never set them that low.

By contrast, put a new bridge p/u in my G&L ASAT Classic. My amp tech told me he thought it was not matched in output with the stock neck. Turns out he had it set too low. A few twists up, done. This one looks higher than I thought would work, but does work very well.

Might as well start this month with another resurrected old topic.

Someone here told me to lower the height of my Strat's middle pickup to help with my palm-muted trem picking. My pick is RIGHT on top of the middle pickup when I palm-mute, and I was bouncing my pick off the poles. I don't remember who it is because I deleted the email or pm and I've forgotten who it was. So sorry. Laughing

But you were completely right. It workds! I lowered the pickup enough to solve the problem, and now nothing but thin palms and practice is limiting me.

Not only that, but I discovered this topic and the discussion of pickup height and tone. All my Strat's pickups were set very high, and the middle one was so high the two center poles barely cleared the strings. I've since then balanced all my pickups to have roughly the same volume and all three are set lower.

I have to make some tone adjustments to my amps and pedals, but this a small price to pay. All three pickups are level, and I still need to hear if I have to raise the trebble side or lower the bass side or not.

I also learned I don't know enough about Strats. So, I've ordered a maintanence manual.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.
