When I woke up this morning, I was humming a guitar riff which I had apprently made up in my sleep. I got up, grabbed the guitar, figured out how to play it and then wrote it down, and now I have the beginning of my next song.
I have another song that I started because someone said something that I thought would make a great title if I only had a song to go with it.
I can't be the only one who gets inspired in odd ways.
Can I?

Back when I was married, my wife was heating up some spahgetti in a pyrex type pot when all of a sudden, we heard a CRACK! The pot had split right down the middle. We were inspired by this sphagetti mess, so our next tune was called "Spahgetti Mess". It was a spahgetti western type tune.

Song inspiration comes in a lot of forms. I've heard music so faint that I have subconsciously filled in the lead portion only to finally get close enough to hear it and realize what I filled in wasn't even close to the song. Sort of a song Deja Vu if you have to put a name on it. But I've used those in my own songs.
Since I started out as a rhythm player a long time ago, most of the songs I write start with a chord progression or digression of some sort. From there, I play the rhythm and more often than not, it "suggests" a lead that might go with it.
I find inspiration comes in cycles (or waves I guess if you're writing surf tunes). Some times you'll have a number of different riff's all crashing around in your mind and other times...nuttin'. DNAdude, you did it right. You wrote it down! I record mine in the studio. Might not do anything with it then or even finish it. But it's there.
One word of caution, I used to nod off at night with my iPod on. Next morning I'd suddenly have this "inspiration" and within an hour a whole new song. Just by chance I was listening to one of my "new" tracks only to finally realize that it was a song from my iPod, not one that I had written. I'd also nailed the song almost dead on so sleep learning works...I don't do the iPod at night anymore...:-)
