Someone once explained to me, and maybe it was on this forum, that because there's no singer/front person, it's best for an instrumental band to add some visuals to keep the audience's interest. There's a reason the singer is referred to as the 'front person'. Most people spend the show staring at him/her, and thus they're more out front than the rest of the band. Without that person, what are we going to look at, the bass drum? the ceiling? a glass of beer?
Therefore interesting outfits and themes and shtick are important to the instrumental band.
do you agree?

I think it depends entirely on the costume. Most costumed surf bands seem to have ideas that fall on the cool side of things, but matching Hawaiian shirts (especially combined with shorts) is definitely uncool.

Like I've said before I'm there for the Music, not the outfits.
Though I do agree a snazy look is better than target Hawaiian shirts,
I'm not gonna not see a band if they do have bad Hawaiian shirts if I like their music. I'll just look around the beach/bar/carshow, etc. for chicks. Or talk to somebody.
I said before I could care less if a band was all wearing big Barrels with suspenders. Now I think that someone from Downsouth should do that. any takers?? The Surge ??? sorry just kidding guys.

Depends on the context. Messhugga Beach Party: waaaay cool!
It adds significantly to the whole concept. Los Straitjackets: absol-
utely! But with most of the bands wearing matching stagewear, it
does nothing for me. I'm all about the music.

When we started Longboard Ranch in 1999 we unanimously opted for the uniform band appearance. We attended numerous surf shows and went for what we felt was the best overall appearance of unity, without undue and starchy formality.
One of the bands whose stage appearance appealed to us all, was The Deoras, Mike Palme's trad surf band. The first time we saw them was at the Huntington Beach Surfing Museum and they were all wearing khaki slacks, and matching Hawaiian Print shirts. Coincidentally, our stage outfits are similar to theirs, (we were fortunate enough that one of our members has a good friend in the rag trade, who travels frequently around the Pacific Rim. He brought us matching Print shirts in both blue and Red, and these are of a quality that Target can only dream of, and retail at about $85 a shirt, though luckily, we didn't have to pay that much!)
The shorts & T-shirts bands are "a dime a dozen" and we always want to show our audiences our respect, by making the visual statement that WE cared enough to dress "special" for the occasion. I've suggested different attire over the past several years, but the other members of the band have been very comfortable with the existing band outfits, so we've stuck with them.
Those bands that try to look like Ventures album shots of the mid 1960's, have my profound respect, but, those sweaters, buttoned-up shirts and ties would NEVER cut it for us at mid-Summer outdoor gigs, in 105-110 degree temperatures!
I mainly agree with the other posts that it should be more about the music, but for us, it's really no additional trouble to "suit up" for a gig, and, I repeat, we feel it sends a very positive message to the people who take the trouble to come see our show.

Just to point out I wasn't saying Hawiian shirts are a bad thing.
I have about 10 to 15 I think. But I only wear them to tiki events.
I still say if I get in a surf band, everyone has to wear other surf band shirts to show support for the scene.

I like the Dude's idea. We'll have to create a band t -shirt trading house.
On that note, the Meshuggas are well on their way to printing up the first batch of t-shirts. Ferenc's wife Karen - our keyboardist extraordinaire - has done an awesome job with the graphics. Look for those in the near future...

matching outfits: cool.
matching dress-up: only if you're good enough to get away with it.
hawaiian shirts: rather not, but I echo Jeff - it's not that important.

If it is really warm outside I feel you have to suck it up for your set.

Hey, funny idea with this little "matching" poll!
This is Ralf Kilauea from the german based Volcanic Instrumental Surfband The Kilaueas.
Were playing in "nearly" matching suits since 98 now. That means we use hawaiian shirts (in good quality, haha! and black suits with jacket.
I think the audience will appreciate it when a band is in a bit special outfit.
Music means fun. Especially surfmusic!
Me and my Kilaueas were once spit out off the Kilauea volcano. Now we are in human dresses... We look like humans! Not really bad feeling...
However, sometimes I got thoughts of playing in a kind of Lavadress... burning the stage and our guitars or something like that...
It`s good when the audience remember you in a few years...
I remember a gig in `99 when we played together with the Apeman from the Netherlands. The got black and white suits and those ape/gorilla masks! And they jumped around the stage with it. Haha! Looks damned funny. But after 4 or 5 songs they throwed the masks away. (too hot for them...)
I love "theme" bands a lot!!!
Hey folks! Hope to meet you at our California tour. check out the Double Crown site. And... no panic, everybody will survive our gigs...
BE TWANGED BE REVERBERATED BE SURFED!!!!!!

If a band can come up with a cool uniform look I think they should. We're just a bunch of old guys so if we started dressing alike it would be kind of creepy. I believe a band should have a visual thing going too so I use a bunch of guitars in a set to give the gearheads something to look at.
