Permalink Surf Music in Video Game...

New Topic

I may be too old for them, but I love computer games. I bought an XBox360 yesterday and chose a war game called 'Bad Company'. One of the options on setup is that you can choose what type of music the vehicle radios play - and one of those choices is 'Surf'. It's pretty cool - it has 'nearly' versions (ie: to avoid paying copyright) 'in the style' of Surf Classics like 'Pipeline' and 'Surf Rider' etc etc. Recommended.

Youth and enthusiasm are no match for age and treachery.

My little brother got it and told me that. Haven't gotten around to playing it

The real winner though is Rocket Jockey. It's old and didn't sell well at all but the entire soundtrack was done by Dick Dale (backed by the Ultras I believe). Not to mention it definitely took visual cues from Roth and gearhead culture etc.

there is a song in Final Fantasy 6, its kind of Pipeline/Wipeoutish..pretty cool and what a great game.

The reality is that we do not wash our own laundry - it just gets dirtier.

That doesn't sound like Dick Dale.

"The soundtrack, done by Surf Guitar God Dick Dale, and backed by bands the Ultras and Alpha 60"
i find lots of people writing these on many different sites. it says so on Wikipedia to. but i dont know..
it didnt say anything about it on DD´s homepage.

Kelly Slaters pro sufer for ps2 had The Space Cossacks and Satans Pilgrims on the sound track. I was just getting into surf music and was listening alot to 1st wavers, hearing Solaris Stomp and virtually dropping off a 100 foot wave at Cortes Banks (oh video games) made me seek out newer bands like them!

The rest of the soundtrack is a lot more characteristic. I see what you mean about this song not sounding like Dick, but it sounds similar to the rest of the album so I never questioned it.

From one random website:

Rocket Jockey is also notable for its surf guitar soundtrack provided by Dick Dale, who is mostly known for writing 'Wipeout' (the song) and 'Miserlou'.

Bzzzzzzt.

I'll send an email to Professor Sludge of the Ultras and see if he can clear up the Rocket Jockey mystery.

Brian gave me the go-ahead, you can download the soundtrack from the url in the comments

http://rrhhww.blogspot.com/2008/08/rocket-jockey-soundtrack.html

I'm posting this because from what I understand, Rocket Science and Segasoft don't exist anymore and the game is out of print. If anybody has an issue with this (or anything else on my blog) let me know and I'll pull it down immediately.

The Surf Coasters did soundtracks for three of the four games in the Runabout series (the first was retitled Felony 11-79 in the US). Definitely not their best work, but there are some great moments on each of the soundtracks. The games are kinda like Crazy Taxi, but with a huge emphasis on destroying public property. Thumbs Up

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Wow, check out this cool response from Prof. Sludge from the Ultras:

Professor Sludge
Hi Brian,

just listened back to Rocket Jockey. Here is my recollection.

The Ultras were hired by the music director of the project (forgot his name - I don't have the packaging box handy).

He had his own surf group (I don't know the name of the group or if it even had a name. I think it was basically just him and a friend).

The Ultras contributed 6 tracks all together.

3 were previously recorded by the Ultras and licensed by Rocket Science. (2 of these were from Surf Pop Sludge)

The other 3 tracks were recorded by the Ultras for the occasion at a recording session Rocket Science set up.

In my track listings I have excluded the original track 1 which was all the video encoding for the game.

Track 7 (1:25) Surrounded By Assassins - an Ultras original we had previously recorded but not released.

Track 8 (2:43) was written by the music director and performed and recorded for the occasion by The Ultras. It may be called "Vashton"

Track 9 (2:32) (don’t know the title) - was also written by the music director and performed and recorded for the occasion by The Ultras.

Track 10 (2:52) Magic Wand – from Surf-Pop-Sludge

Track 11 (4:14) Death Tube - from Surf-Pop-Sludge

Track 12 (4:41) UltraMan - an Ultras original performed and recorded for the occasion by The Ultras. (never recorded or released anywhere else)

Tracks 3, 4, 5, 6 all sound like Dick Dale to me - at least a couple of those were previously released by him, maybe all – I don’t know.

I believe Tracks 1, 2, and 13-20 are all the music director’s band.

Some other notes – Rocket Science went out of business not long after Rocket jockey was released.

The Ultras opened a bunch of shows for Dick Dale in the 90’s – at the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, at Slim’s in San Francisco, in San Jose, and elsewhere. Dick Dale was particularly amazing at the Phoenix Theater.

The Ultras (actually just me on guitar and Trey Sabatelli on drums) collaborated with Morey Goldstein (keyboards, sax, producer) on another video game soundtrack from 1995 called Jet Ski. I don’t think it ever got released.

Hope this clears up some of the confusion.

Best,
Eric Lenchner

P.S. The Ultras never jammed or recorded with Dick Dale, though we did submit Magic Wand and Death Tube to him through our mutual producer, Scott Mathews. My guess is that Dick never listened to the songs.

I have Surf-Pop-Sludge, and while not all of it may be considered surf, it has some KILLER surf tunes on it, like Magic Wand and Death Tube. Highly recommended! Thumbs Up

The Penetrators had several of their songs in an Australian Playstation One videogame about 7 years ago. I think it was eventually a budget release in Europe as well. It was called California Surfing. Unfortunately, we never got to play it because the Australian/Euro format is incompatible with the US system. Still, it paid pretty well - wish we could hook into more opportunities like that!
