In my case, I was in a rock band and managed to sneak some surf tunes into the set. That band has since broken up, but now I'm in the process of forming a surf instro group. I sent a guitar player friend some youtube videos to watch and now all he wants to do is play surf. Another guitarist got equally hooked from the same videos and wants to switch to bass. The old band's drummer is willing to play anything as long as he can get some gigs.
How did it happen for you?

Started playing punk and metal years ago but always listened to surf cuz of my dad. Joined a psychobilly band with heavy surf influences, then started a one man punk band that had songs randomly turn into surf tunes every so often. With too many surf riffs to throw into my punk songs I decided to record a one man surf album and here I am.

My first band was " Los 4 Tikis" it was about 3 years ago, we are good friends and we use to skate all day long, and then formed the band playing The Ventures covers and so ... that's the reason I play bass ... then 3 years later we changed the name to "The Inaina! Tikis" and continue playing with the same guys.. Now one of the guitar players is leaving Mexico to study in Canada, so in the meantime we are lloking for a new one.

The trick where I live has been finding other musicians who are into surf intstro. I see all this videos from Huntington Beach and am green with envy at the number of people who play surf there!

Surf Report 1993 - 2005. When we started this band I was so clueless about surf. I just learned as we went along

as much as some people think that I just go to shows, and critique bands.
I have played in 2 bands.
the first was the Intrepids, with 3 freinds that I had met at the Surfing Museum shows. 1 of which was Jim Frias of the Nocturnes.
we did 2 shows, 1st was at a Ice Cream Parlor, (hey Dick Dale played at a Ice Cream Parlor "the rinky dink" before he played at the Rendevous ballroom) and then we did a back yard party.
2nd band I was in, was a super group of sorts minus me of course.
The Moby Dicks, just 10 studio tracks,
Bill McGlynn of the Glasgow Tiki Sakers on Lead and Rhythm,
Billy Scanlan of the Detonators, on Rhythm and Lead,
Adrien Anthony of Chum and the Insect Surfers on Drums
and me Jeff on Bass.
Phil Dirt and other big names gave our cdr very good reviews.

My first all Surf band was the Sliders in 1988.
we were the second band to play at the HBISM grand opening after Dick. we were the darlings of the Museum until an episode in one of the 4th of July parades where we got in hot water for drinking on the float...oops.
We did really well from 88 until about 93. we played every dive, surf contest , car show up and down PCH from Redondo to Newport. had a great time!
before that I had a group that did half instro and half vocals, Authorized Dealer. 1979

From the outer banks? Yeah. So I'm working on converting a few musicians from other genres. We'll see how it works out.

I was in the Moon Monkeys (I guess I still am). We started the band after I left the Aquabats (couldn't tour with a baby) and opened for them at local gigs. After that we played around Orange County for awhile and wrote around 17 originals (I still want to record them!). We never got to play with anyone too famous (does The Moseleys count?) but we our best show was at the 13th Floor in Huntington/Sunset (anyone go to that?).
This is from the "Prom" show at Chain Reaction in Anaheim:

Hey, Jeff! Thanks for being there, at least one person saw us play...My favorite part of that show was watching Paul destroy his amp because it wouldn't work (I miss The Moseleys).
Sorry about the non-replys, the company the website is hosted by never could get the emails right...I lost touch with alot of people because of that.

I answered an ad in the local want ad rag called "The Recycler" for a drummer for a surf band that a guy named Jerry was putting together because he had sent a demo tape to a local venue called "The Coach House"...and they wanted him to have his band open for "Spirit" and "Arthur Lee and Love"...only problem was...he had no band! We rehearsed for a couple of months (all surf covers) and played the gig...wearing the matching red shirts that I had picked up at a local Target store earlier in the day. It was amazing to see and hear the reaction of the crowd when they saw us take the stage in our matching outfits. It was a good investment of $9.95 a piece (on sale)...we then went on to wear matching red jackets, play matching fender guitars through matching blonde fender amps!...
...anyone?
