ive been at a music program in phily for the past few weeks and while i was there somebody stole my american strat and mexi jazz after a show. anyway so my one glorious fender is gone and i will be selling my gretsch tomorrow so i can get another. im hesitant to get another strat right after losing mine since mine was pretty modded and i think that i would probobly get frusterated and ultimatly disapointed trying to make it sounds like my old strat, so im thinking of going with a tele and just use my danelectro for surf. im sure there are some tele guys out there so what would you guys suggest? the 50's telecaster looks like it would be a nice solid guitar, but im also liking the new players baja telecaster which seems like its basicly a 50s telecaster with much more pickup and wiring options, although at 800 bucks its alittle out of my price range as i plan on spending no more than 700 dollars

Have you tried a Hwy 1 Tele? I was very impressed by the one I tried at GC. It has a satin finish on the neck, which I personally prefer to the glossier finish on the 50s strat, and it had the vintage pickups which sounded sweet. The finish on the body is satin as well and looked great in tobacco burst...though I hear it wears very easily. The one I played had the lowest action I've ever played with minimal fret buzz.

Ditto on the Highway 1 Tele...I got one second hand from a buddy (Mitch with The Surge), and I really like it. I did take it apart and polish the body and neck with some Meguiars car wax, so it isn't satin any more. I also replaced the saddles with the brass '52 Tele RI ones, and also got a '52 string tree. The stock pups sound great, just like a Tele should. It's by far the best deal out there for a USA built Tele. For cosmetic reasons I'd have preferred the vintage style Kluson tuners that are on the Highway 1 Texas Tele, but the American Standard style ones that came on it stay in tune just fine.
I haven't tried one, but the Mexican-built '50's and '60's Teles seem like nice guitars for the money, too. You may need to do a pickup upgrade on them, though, to get "the" sound.
