Man I'm so stoked that an idea I brought up last early spring materialized
"A Surf Convention" and it happened and it was a success! I want to get this one rollin' and plan plan plan!! I want to shoot for August of 2009 in Southern California and there's no other better place then SoCal, I have a good feeling that this will become an annual event and it should be and why not.
This is the best time to save & plan for next years travel expenses etc. and that's exactly what I'm going to do, I was not able to attend this years do to commitments and funds.
Jeff let's talk & thank you for taking on this big task, organizer seeing through that the schedule and times flowed nicely you name it Jeff Where can I start....a thank you doesn't even express a thank you it goes way and beyond a thank you and next year I'll be there side by side with ya Jeff 100% to help and organize.
Location & Venue or Venues: Southern California / Unknown
Date: August 2009
I will post some more of my thoughts and plans soon...

Pretty good idea to start planning now. I say you should start asking bands if they're willing to do this, for next years event.

This is just like Carnaval, how in Rio they start preparing for next year's event the first day following all the festivities. Now all we need is scantily clad Brazilian women to show up.

Wooza, if you sit far enough back at the Pier you can see the beach, too. My vision may be dimming with age, but ... Brazil has nothing on Huntington Beach. Of course, further back you do tend to fry a bit ... (Nice job on Exotic, by the way!)
Good luck with next year to any and all potential organizers! I had a blast this year, and though I am not sure I can do it every year, I am pretty sure that sufficient numbers would be able to do it in any given year, given a good location, to make it something that can happen every year. I am not sure what location is implied above, but I would definitely be excited to hear some of the PNW bands. If I couldn't come to a PNW version, it wouldn't be the location. It would just be my own situation that year. I'd be equally happy with HB or San Francisco, I suspect. Europe or Australia might be fun some time, but it would be difficult at the moment.
Drawing on my extensive experience in letting other folks organize things for me, I suspect that some sort of minimalist "constitution" is needed to formalize peoples' expectations, as much the expectations of the potential organizers, actually, as those of the attendees. We would need to think about things like the time frame, how one proposes a site for a given year, how the meet interacts with the Forum, any constraints on locations, general nature of the program, etc. Assuming willing hosts, it might be reasonable to do something like alternating HB (or LA?) and away.
An important consideration this year was that this coincided with a big show at the HB Pier, put on by the International Surfing Museum. I think there were ideas on whether that was good or bad, and that it wasn't 100% convenient in some ways for some people, but it was certainly the nucleus of my decision to come out this year. A chance to see Pollo del Mar, the Madeira, and some others - even though who not quite certain initially - was too much to pass up. Also a factor, naturally, was a chance to see other people enjoying the AquaSonics.
I suppose the one thing probably not needed is a mailing list! Well, two things - that and a name ...

Continuing the ballroom options, there are a few old "surf halls" available in and around LA and the south bay:
Neptunian Woman's Club of Manhattan Beach (Don't let the name scare you, it's classic and cool)
920 Highland Ave
Manhattan Beach, CA 90266
(310) 374-9473
Elks Lodge (down and dirty...)
315 Esplanade
Redondo Beach, CA 90277
(310) 372-8488
or my personal fave (it's a block from my house)
Belmont Shore Chalet
5107 E Ocean Blvd, Long Beach, California 90803
(562) 438-1557
I do like the idea of Kona however. I am so glad they didn't tear it down for condos as planned.
With a lot of notice (like a year!), we might be able to hook up with some cool other places around town as well.
Cheers,
Ted

Is that possibly due to Ripples bar next door you big silly?
Regarding a date for the event, schedule in conjunction with the premiere of "Sound Of The Surf" seems like a good fit.

I'm gonna start saving now too....i'm not gonna miss the next one! I wanna meet all you guys...and gals....and it would be an honor to play with any of you anytime. If i can't get the funds by next June 12th....i'm gonna paddle over. I know, it's a long way and i might not make it....but a corn dog from Zack's would be enough motivation!! Well, maybe not but....i'm gonna be there! Can i use my own guitar or do i have to play a rightie upside down? It's OK, that's what i learned on...it's just those knobs and switches in my arm pit...but that's cool...i just want to play with you guys!

I had a high school reunion there. Great views but parking would be a major hassle, maybe impossible. I don't know if it would be possible to have it at a campus, Long Beach State or City College is close to Ted. They probably have some rules about alchohol even though CSULB has a bar on campus.

Aloha, Ron: Just got back from Kauai and read your post. You have a standing invitation to stay at my place in Malibu if you or others with the TakeOffs can make it over. And you can borrow my amps -- I don't have a lefty guitar but I have a JM, a Tele w/Bigsby and an new Jag set to show up on the UPS truck this week. I'd love to hear how they sound with someone who knows how to play 'em. Loved your show last Sunday at the Sheraton!
And I second the plea of Unsteady Freddie--please don't schedule for late July / early August--I'll probably be back somewhere in Hawaii.

Yeah, that's her. The Tele i mean!! More often than not...we are the first 'live' band a lot of these kids have ever seen. It's one off the best parts about this gig. I get photos of kids playing upside down now...i treasure them!! Hey, maybe that picture should be the cover of my solo project!! How's the sunset back there? That little girl is like..."boring!! when is Paris Hilton coming out?" haha
