Permalink The Mermen at Slim's tonight

This is going to be a great show. The band has been working on lots of old and new stuff. Sure (as someone told me), this is not your Mother's surf music, but its really fresh and dynamic.

The show last night at the Park Chalet was fantastic. What a scene, and what great music. Wish I could go tonight to Slim's.

This HAD to be a great show!!! I always loved seeing bands at SLIMS. I'd have been there in heartbeat if were still in SF!! Please tell me someone went to this and was blown away!

I remember right before I moved, I was working at the Beach/Park Chalet, and used to grab a beer after my shift and just sit and listen to music. That was when The Shi-Tones played weekly. Wow, what a great time that had to have been.

It was a great show. With no opening band, the Mermen played
from about 9:30 until 1:15 with a 30 minute break. Jim played a
double neck strat (OUCH!!!!) the whole show. Allen in particular,
was absolutely on fire all night. I'll try to put together a more
extensive review when time permits.

Here's a review fby Robert Garvey from the Mermen Yahoo Group:

Friday 11 July 2008 at Slim's Message List

The Mermen started at 9:15, taking a break as requested by the club's
management, then resuming the music at 11:20. It was well after 1:00
before the last notes faded into the night air. Each set was at least
ninety minutes and the encore stretched on for three tunes.

Here's the setlist to the best of my recollection.

1st set
Righteous Punishment
Into the West
Be My Noir
Emmylou Rides Clarence West Then South
With No Definite Future and No Purpose Other Than to Prevail Somehow
Obsession for Men
The Drowning Man Knows His God
Between I and Thou
Sponge Cookie
Jesus in the Sky
100-Foot Lemon
Splashing with the Mermaid
Last Forever

2nd set
Jungle Rot
To Be Naked and French Is Always Hard
Gulch of Spleens
Pulpin' Line
My Black Bag
Krill Slippin'
Big Day at the Bay
Raglan
Dragonfly
Blue Xoam
Joni Mitchell's House
Soul Surfin'

encore
The Goodbye
The Intractable Boy
Under the Kou Tree

This was the first time I'd heard 100-Foot Lemon performed live. Martyn
said the tune had been recently reconstituted. It sounded better than
any recording I've heard, with the splendid tension expanded, a sojourn
into some harmonic twilight zone during the improvisatory middle section
before return to the central theme. It takes a village to squeeze a
lemon as giant as that one. Good work on the lightshow, Jaime!

It was a very good show and splendid to see so many familiar friendly
faces.

I feel your pain, Jeff! Sorry

It's kinda how I feel about the Insects and all the great SoCal
bands that we rarely get to see up here. It hurts. But I just gotta
make it a priority to get down there more often.

My job is being eliminated soon, Suicide so I may have a
whole lotta time on my hands to get down there for visits (or to
live?) and finally put a band together wherever I end up living.

thanks Ferenc,

Both shows together were an event no cell in my body will soon forget. The music was non-stop, ecstasy. Very inspiring.

Videos are already showing up from the Slims show.

FYI, The Mermen have redone their website at: http://mermen.net with a store where they have old and new music being offered for download at reasonable prices.

Oh, one other crazy thing - I have heard they are opening for The Surf Coasters at Moe's in September!

It's true, but it will be the Shitones incarnation of the band. Still, that is a helluva bill.
