Whats funny is, all of this arguing isn't going to change anyones mind.
Thats why I have stayed out of it so far.
as for the Mermen and other"progressive surf bands"
I have seen some people go to see them and just stand there and zone out like its art show.
and I have seen some people dance around like they are at a party.
al beit a a deadhead party, but a party none the less.
same music, 2 different reactions.
mellow and thoughtful, and hyper and thoughtless,
Odd?
no, just depends on the what you liek to do while hearing music.
I'm kinda in the middle,
I bop around a little and nod my head to the beat.
But I have been known to sit in a chair and veg out to Pollo, Mermen, Insects, and The more out there Blue Hawaiians songs.
does that make me a freaky Hippie, and takes psychedelic drugs and trip out to the Music? No it just means that some times my legs hurt and I wanna sit down and enjoy the tunes.
whats really funny is how much Zak says he wants to see people dancin at their shows, Yet when some of the more upbeat bands were playing
at the Toronto Great Lakes surf battle, If Zak was there he was just standing watchin, not dancin or boppin his head at all.
Do I care? No,
just sayin.....
so enough with the complaining all ready.
its old news.
its the 4th of July weekend, go out and blow somethin up.

If Zak was there he was just standing watchin
AND making sarcastic comments. Don't overlook the essential element!
yes but not shakin yer ass or dancin at all.
I'm sure Kristena would have loved to Dance with ya.

I liked seeing say, the Bomboras with their Go-Go girls and fire and the next night I liked seeing another band without.
I really think The Bomboras were the only band that could pull off the "go-go dancer" thing without it seeming uterly lame. They had Sherry there almost from the inception and she was as much a part of the show as any of it's members. Kina too. other surf bands may have done it back then, but it seems like every band has to have a dancer and it's just lame. Two things the surf scene could do without- lame go-go dancers and tired ass wrestling masks!

We could use some like Bobby had here - they seem to add a bang to the performance in this video.

I always hate it when bands like THE ISOTOPES bring out those High School nymphettes, I mean cheerleaders, I mean go-go dancers; it's an awful distraction....personally I can only handle about 6 or 7 hours of this before I get real annoyed

No one is going to revolutionize surf.
But they should. But it wouldn't be a true surf album.
i disagree. i think surf is perfect the way it is and anyone trying to go about and 'revolutionize' it won't get even a 10 second listen from me. i dont hate the new progressive surf bands out there, but if someone were to take a step beyond that i would lose interest.
my band is definitely a party band, and that's the way i like it. that's why i fell in love with the genre.

Josh, but everybody in the genre wouldn't have to change.
I would just really like to hear a surf album that challenged me as a listener. A surf album with a groove or modern electronic beats. A Radiohead or Postal Service surf album. It could potentially sound really cool.

hey man, don't get me wrong, i like things that challenge me as a listener, but that's what i listen to other genres for.
this is getting really off-topic.

Damn. Umm... They're pretty good. If all go-go dancers were like that, I would heartily support the entire concept.

Jake rarely misses an opportunity to signal his boredom with surf music.
Anyway, it's - kinda - been done. The Surf Coasters did an electronic remix of their track "Waste Land" on their '95 mini-album "Waitin 4 the Surf". Worked amazingly well, I thought. Then they tried to do it for the entire CD, "Surfdelicious" in '98 (mostly dance/electronic/ambient remixes of existing tracks). Didn't work so well, I thought. It just sounded forced and boring. But I think it had great potential. Oh well.

Aquasonic Maui put an ad in a free newspaper, asking for "Go-Go Dancers needed"...he had several men call and ask if they could dance for us. He said no.
