Every time I see a Fender Custom Shop Relic for $4000.00
(or Gibson, for that matter), I just shake my head. People
have been generally paying more for "mint" vintage instruments
than for less-than-mint instruments for years, and now some
genius comes up with the idea to intentionally distress expensive
new Custom shop guitars, and charge more for the beat up
instruments! Manufacturers will build anything upon which they
can make a profit. I don't get why people would buy them. Confused
Am I the only one who thinks this is really stupid???

I totally agree. I like my guitars to look as close as possible to how a new guitar looked like in 1963. People who favour beaten up guitars don't get it Wink

I don mind if it's authentic - rather not on my guitars though. but the relics are plain stupid.

a dutch mag had this pic recently, form the Fender stand at NAMM '06. this is a Jeff Beck relic tele... the comment the mag gave with the pic was: "please don 't touch? oh right, you might damage it."

I think the only people who can afford a relic work so hard they'd never have a chance to actually play the thing, much less get a band together. So the appeal of a well played guitar may play into their escapist fantasy.
That will be 10 cents please.

I think that's pretty lame, too. It's like when people buy jeans that are pre-ripped. I just don't get it.

Well, check out my brand new 'relic' ferrari:

Well maybe Danny was using some common sense about posting large pictures to the forums. Wink

I agree. Buying relic guitars is like buying those vintage rock shirts that come prefaded for 50 bucks.

On the other hand, guys that treat their guitars like newborns bother me too. My old guitar teacher has like a late 50s Les Paul that's turned so green I can't tell what the original color was and he plays it every gig every day. I think that's pretty cool.

I think if I saw someone playing that Jeff Beck guitar under the age of 60 I'd have to ask what the hell happened. . .pyrotechnics explosion?

It's a matter of taste. I like 'em if they're done right. In fact, I've got three reliced Teles and a reliced Strat. They're all non-Fender parts guitars with aged hardware and finishes. They look and sound great. In fact, one of the reasons I like them is because, even though they're new, they feel already broken in. So, in addition to looking and sounding right, they feel right too.

With all this eBay and buying for investment craziness going on, I certainly can't afford a vintage Strat or Tele anymore. However, I really love the feel of them. So, why not? I know they're fakes and I don't try to pass them off as real and I have guitars that I actually play.
