Those that have a desire to go back in time to 1958, to a place outside of southern California and tag the Surf label on unsuspecting musicians, I’d like to ask: Can you listen? Do you hear a difference between Duane Eddy and The Lively Ones? There’s a different attitude in Surf. at the post convention show at don the beachcomber two years ago, paul johnson and phil orr played tunes by bands that influenced them. i think they played a duane eddy tune or two. by the way, it was a great set of tunes. |

I THINK there is a valid place, here (SG101), to discuss Pre and Proto Surf music. Else, why the enthusiasm for the Birth of Surf and similar releases. I am still full of a life-time of built-up unspent enthusiasm for these forms of music. And I hope I never get so used to them that I won't eagerly write, or even read, about it without getting frustrated. It wasn't that long ago that I was running around here, so to speak, telling everyone all my thoughts and discoveries about surf music as if I were a little kid who had just discovered the candy section of a super market. It's easy to pigeon-hole most late 50's and early 60's instros into the surf category - back then, they only had so many effects to add to a dry guitar, and many songs do end up sounding a bit "Surfy". But at the time, there was no surf music, there was barely surfing in popular culture. It's a huge dis-service to those bands to try and classify them with bands that were surf bands. There is nothing wrong with instro music that isn't surf - that's not put down in any way. For some surf fans, they love the music so much, that they can't believe anyone would NOT want to be classified as a "Surf" band. If an instrumental band isn't surf music, then it must be some lower class of music? Like: "The Ventures aren't surf, but if they work hard at it, maybe someday they can be - wouldn't that be great!" —"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been" Last edited: Jul 24, 2012 08:48:40 |

Muzz, it sounds like you might have been at the Rendezvous in 61 and 62, as Movin and Groovin was one of the favorite dance numbers and the wood floor really shook. |

I think the closest thing we have to an actual Duane Eddy surf album, is "Surfin' Hootenanny"... by Al Casey! Al was Duane's self-described "utility player" in the studio since 1958, and even wrote Ramrod. Lee Hazlewood wrote the title track and "Guitars, Guitars, Guitars" and approached Casey to record them in Phoenix. According to the liner notes to the cd reissue, Lee "would have produced them with Duane Eddy on guitar if the two had been speaking at the time". The single "Surfin' Hootenanny" got airplay, and eventually peaked at #48 on Billboard. This prompted Hazlewood write several more tunes for the LP, which was hastily recorded at RCA studios in LA in about 6 hours(!). One wonders how much higher "Surfin' Hootenanny" may have charted with Duane Eddy's name attached. In the lyrics, when they sing: "every guitar player you're going to meet", they shout "Dick Dale!...The Ventures!....Duane Eddy!" with Casey playing licks in each style. Not surprisingly, Duane Eddy's sound is the only one he really nails. |

Slightly off topic, but I was excited today while at work (my day job is at a whale watching/tour company in Bellingham, WA). I took a reservation from Duane Eddy!
