Nothing wrong with the kid's playing skills but his backing band must be one of the most awful sounding I've ever heard.

The point was that here is a nine year old kid playing his heart out on TV. Last time I checked my TV guide, there were no shows scheduled featuring 9 year old prodigys on surf guitar. The Japanese are lucky that way.
Whether the Royal Fingers version is more enjoyable is a matter of opinion and taste. I don't care for their lo-fi tone palette, and I expect to hear adults play the instrument with some degree of facility--that's a dog bites man story--but I don't expect it from a nine year old. That's precisely what makes it a novelty act.
Is he equal to the Surf Coasters or the Blue Jeans? Not the point. He's very talented. I hope he keeps it up.
