Permalink how is the Economy and gas prices going to affect surf

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

Just wondering.....

since the turn out for the South Bay Surf Stomp and some other shows recently has been kinda low.
if Gas prices are making people stay home.

and also is this going to affect the bands that are considering touring?

Jeff(bigtikidude)

bigtikidude asks a good question. However, I always thought that SG101 was my Bat Cave away from the problems of the world.

sorry for bringing up a negative issue,
but being that attendance at surf shows is always a iffy issue.
sometimes great, sometimes horrible.
I think that this will only make it worse.

I know that my wallet is already hurting,
and the real chunk of summer shows hasn't even started yet.
surely a reason for people to car pool to shows now.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

It definitely hurts touring bands and it is a really vicious cycle.
For Bands: Higher gas prices = higher fees
For Fans: Higher gas prices + higher door charge = less going out
Less going out = less club support
= we are all screwed.

i'd like to see what Prof Pongracic's take on this one is...

it seems to me that we may be entering an extended phase of "stagflation"...wages remain stable, but prices in many sectors continue to rise...

i do think that the rising costs for food, fuel, lodging, airfare will have profound impacts on the music scene in general...

With my car getting about (17mpg) it would cost about $60.00 to drive to huntington beach and home again. Will I do it. Yes, maybe once or twice, but not reguarly. I would rather spend the accrued money on music stuff. you know ,,, guitars , amps, drums, you know,,,stuff. Wink
My big cost is paying someone to look after all my animals while I'm away. It's not the distance that stops me. It's the time it takes to get there and back.
Local shows I will attend at the drop of a hat.

Joel

Zak,
true,

Ferenc,
I am trying to do my part, by going to as much as possible.
but, there have been a few shows in The Valley, north of LA or down in San Diego that I have passed on, just because I didn't have the money to pay for the gas.

I am planning on going to SD this Sun. though, but I'm hoping some people will want to go also, so we can split the cost.

The shows at Suzy's for Memorial Day weekend are usually pretty well attended,
and everybody on TV and Radio was saying that most people were not going to be traveling for the holiday weekend, so I was trying to figure out why the turnout was so low.
yes the weather was a bit cooler than normal, but it wasn't raining at all.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

I think dp is exactly right - I've been predicting another prolonged period of stagflation for six months now. The main reason why gas has been going up in the USA so much is because the dollar has been plummeting for several years - a direct result of a very 'easy' or loose monetary policy by the Federal Reserve (i.e., the Fed printing up and injecting a LOT of new money into the markets). Oil is traded around the world using US dollars, so as each dollar becomes cheaper it takes more of them to buy the same amount of oil. Of course, there are some 'real' factors (i.e., non-monetary factors) pushing up the price of oil, such as an increase in demand in China and India and supply stoppages, etc., but I think the Federal Reserve is behind most of it. I think they have been badly screwing up the monetary policy for the last seven years or so, and we will all pay a heavy price for it. I truly hate the very institution of the Federal Reserve or central banking, period. The Fed has been the most destructive economic force in the US since its founding in 1913 - it was responsible for the Great Depression and the seventies stagflation - and it looks like we're well on the way to another major economic crisis that has been created by the stupid monetary policy.

I'm also very depressed about the rising gas prices. As for many of you, it hits very close to home. The Madeira is now spread out over three states. I'm 200 miles away from our rhythm section, and Patrick still lives in San Diego. I worry that it may simply become too expensive for him to fly back to Indy very often. I also have to spend $50 in gas to do anything with the band, being 200 miles away, but that's OK, I can afford it once a month or every two months. The bigger problem for me and my wife is that we live in the middle of nowhere and have to travel about 70 miles away just to get some culture or do some more serious shopping. That's all becoming much more expensive. Reading the Wall Street Journal regularly, as I do, only makes me more depressed. I see doom and gloom everywhere. I don't see things getting much better for the foreseeable future, and if the government tries to artificially stimulate it (as they are, with both fiscal and monetary policy), and if it works at all (which it probably won't), it will just postpone the pain and make it even bigger shortly down the road. Times are not good.

Like Zak said, most surf bands do this for the love of it, and probably many of them will continue despite the higher costs. But at the margin it will definitely discourage some bands from touring or playing some shows or releasing a CD, etc. It stinks....

Leave it to an econ prof. to tell it like it is..... Thumbs Up
Time are a changing.
But what the hay. They have been changing all my life. Any body remember when gas was 19cents a gallon, or Mc D's burgers were 19 cents each?
I do.
I'll tell you all now. Time always changes.
The trick to living good is to just ignore the problem and live as well as you can. Wink

What matters is not what the absolute level of price of gas is, but rather relative to other prices and people's incomes - in other words, adjusted for inflation. Five years ago, in inflation adjusted terms, gas price was about the lowest it had EVER been. Today it's the highest it's ever been. One saving grace is that general incomes have been rising through the decades, so as a percentage of overal income (of course, in terms of averages) people are still spending a smaller part of their income on gas than at many points over the last fifty years. The problem of course is that the gas price will not stay at the current level - it will continue to rise. Some people have been predicting $6/gallon by the end of the summer. I think that's probably exaggerated, but I wouldn't be surprised if it went up to $5. And at that level we will probably be reaching the highest percentage of income spent on gas. It's gonna hurt. Get ready.

ugh sorry I brought it up, where's the noose?

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Ivan, it is $5.00 a gal here.
Over for diesel.
I do agree with what you are saying. Just trying to add some prospective to history though.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. I remember looking for the the 19 cent gas instead of the 21 cent gas because it was way to expensive at 21 cents a gal.

My first ever weeks pay check was a bring home of $15.00. As a teenager that was the most money I had ever had in my entire life.
I have of course prospered greatly since then.
Now I make $20. a week. Wink

Joel

Jeff I got a rope here. but don't worry it doesnt have your name on it. I'm with Ivan. It's for the fed reserve.
