Permalink Bad introduction to the shadows :-(

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 Next

So I never had any exposure to the shadows. After hearing Ivan and others go on about them I decided to do some listening before getting an album to find which one to get. I go to youtube and am confronted with tons of vids so I pick the first song I'm familiar with. Bad mistake... I'm speachless, which is new for me by the way... I mean, all of us who lived through it did some things we're not proud of during the disco era, but DAMN! As a side note any recommendations for a great album to get would be appreciated. I'm not clicking any youtube things for a day or two...

I really Love the old Shadows stuff from 60 to 66.
but here is another bad one.

My favorite part of all those old lip-syncing videos is the shit-eating grins the performers all seem to have

No matter how hard I try, I just can't achieve a similar, well, dopey look (I suppose some may argue about this)

Correction: I guess it's not really lip-synching if it's instrumental, is it?

The Shadows are just as guilty of heinous music in the 70s as the Ventures were. I'm sure that they felt that they were being progressive at the time. Obviously just hoping to continue to sell records.

Of course I'm just stating the obvious.

That should give you a much better idea what the Shadows were all about in their heyday.

And please, for God's sake, stay away from anything post-'75 by the Shadows! Or maybe even, post-'65, since you're new to them...

Google for the "Shadows are GO!" CD. That's a great introduction compilation CD.

I always appreciated what Nirvana was trying to send up in the In Bloom video. That whole goofy grin, stiff look thing from 60s videos.

I don't think any of the Shadows stuff I have seen (even later) is too, too bad?

or even better the Shadows complete best of Australian import cd,
with 30 songs.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Do you have an exact title for that BTD? Thanks.

Brian, sure.
"30 all time greatest hits"
EMI -Australia 1997
catalog number 7243 814898 2 6

not sure if its in print still.
its a cd comp of the 2 lp greatest hits it says, minus the cross tracks.

I also have the Shadow are go best of, which has some songs that are not on
the aussie comp,

then I have
The Shadows
Out of the Shadows
Hurrah for the Shadows
The Abbey Road collection, all songs with strings,
a double live cd Live at Abbey Road, and the Liverpool Empire
The Shadows, master series(newer version s of classics)( kinda soso)
and the Shadows and Ventures back to back, some deep album tracks by both bands.
and a career restrospective box set of 6 cds.
some great and some horrible.

I had, then sold to Duff of the Torquays, the 6 cd box set, the Complete Shadows, it was just 59 to 64, and was from EMI and just amazing.
but I never listened to it, and I sold it. now im kicking myself because if you can find it its way more money.

Sorry, but I just can't stand The Shadows. It's all so Bloody nice and polite. I was into them when I was very, very young in the mid to late '60s but I can't bear it now. I prefer a bit of dirt ... lol. The first Ventures thing I heard that made an impact on me was The Flight of The 100 ton Bumble Bee (is that the right title?) I thought. 'Woo - the Shads wouldn't have done this' haha. America 1: UK 0 ...

If you do like The Shadows then you might also want to check out the records of Jet Harris & Tony Meehan who split from the band to have several guitar instro hits on their own here. One was 'Diamonds' ... I still have the original 45.

Man of Mystery and The Savage have some nice bite to them.

I used to think the Ventures were too polite, lol.

A couple of evenings ago, I sat and watched The Shadows Final Tour DVD and just sat mesmerized by Hank's talent and just how good those guys are. What an awesome DVD!! The sound was incredible and I came away with a new rhythm guitar hero too!!

Well, I look at ALL music from the past the way a paleontologist sifts through a rat midden, or an archeologist examines the ancient scat in the sewers of Herculaneum. "Hmm, I see they swallowed a lot of pomegranite seeds. And cherry stones."

But the Shadows were very tasteful, and their music was simple, but well structured for their instrumentation--it was very musical. But once I have become familiar with a piece, it's hard for me to keep listening to it. And to listen to it over and over? Yikes! You chew all the flavor out of it! I read a story once about how Mark Mothersbaugh got arrested back in the day for something or other and the cops locked him in the the tank and put a boom box just beyond his reach that played 'Whip It' over and over again on a continuous loop all night long. Now that is cruel and unusual punishment.

In defence of the Shadows - compare the killer solo in their original of The Savage to the Ventures - oh wait you can't because the Ventures didn't even attempt a solo in their version, probably knew when they were beaten!

Yes the Shads are a bit nicey-nice sometimes but there is plenty of rockin' stuff too - Shadoogie, FBI, Man of Mystery, Ranka-chank, and how about the drum solo on Little B?

And what about the cool stuff? Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt, Scotch on the Socks, Nivram, etc etc

For what it's worth i reviewed their Final Tour DVD on my website:

Also check out Jet Harris' version of The Man with the Golden Arm - a badass 6 string bass sound!
