just shot my first 'video' at ASBURY LANES the other night
it plays backs with an .avi suffix, which my computer supports, no problem
created an account at YouTube, and am trying to upload it
now, forgive my ignorance here....this is new to me.....
but it is taking FOREVER....
and I am getting this message,
PLEASE BE PATIENT—THIS MAY TAKE SEVERAL MINUTES.
ONCE COMPLETED, YOU WILL SEE A CONFIRMATION MESSAGE.
I suspect I am not doing this right
can I get a little guidance here?
thanks a lot

I've never done this myself,
but I heard that its best to keep the clips under 3 or 4 min.

Freddie, let's see if we can figure out what is or isnt happening. Starting with...
Are you trying to upload full-size video? If so, that would be WAY too huge. Probably in the hundreds of megabytes?
The file you are uploading to YouTube SHOULD be somewhere between 10Mb to 70Mb in size if it is properly encoded for web. Meaning the clip should be webified to something like 320x240 in size using a codec like Mpeg-4. (YouTube prefers these settings / codec.) If you want to play around with encoding, you can even drop the frame rate from 30fps to 15 fps. Internet doesnt really matter what frame rate and this will save a lot of space. YOu can also reduce the audio from 48Khz to 22Khz and make it mono. But the video settings will make the biggest difference.
What are you using to edit/compress/encode/output video? If it is AVI files you must be using a Microsoft product like MovieMaker, Premiere or vegas??? Are you compressing using the app or another app?

Yeah, .avi files are not typically compressed and would be way too big. See if you can convert it to a mp4. I had the best results with mp4.

UF-
I had trouble with .avi files so I converted 'em to .mov and it works fine.

Maybe YouTube works better now, but 2 years ago I tried uploading .mov files and the audio got way out of sync with the video when YouTube published them.

Mr Unsteady Freddie
I've used a very basic "windows movie maker" to convert myshort avi videos for website.
You may already have it, if you've got xp - might be hidden. Otherwise I found a link to download it. This site doesn't talk it up very much but for simple video I found it useful.
http://www.download.com/Windows-Movie-Maker-Windows-XP-/3000-13631_4-10165075.html?cdlPid=10187903
(The microsoft site leads you up the garden path)
If, and only if, it works for you - you can convert files into very small Mb's by going to 'file' and then 'save movie file' where it will give you different options.
Only try this if you're having a good day - it looks like your patience has been tested once or twice already. Just remember I live on the other side of the planet to you

I uploaded a 2:26 min (appx) video to youtube from my kodak digital and it took about 40 minutes to complete even with a high speed connection. The max you can upload is 10 minutes. It was my first and only uploaded video to date. Just be patient and let it upload on it's own. While you're waiting, go get beer but walk s-l-o-w-l-y. Here is the video I uploaded. Not surf by any means but anyone over 40 will just LOVE this..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5x24eGxz14

Hmmm..perhaps just beginners luck for me but I do recall a bit of colorful language on my part before all was said and done I saw that message also and I was still successful. This from a computer illiterate moron who took almost a year to learn to post pics here. I think you're on the right track Unsteady one. This is a good thing "PLEASE BE PATIENT—THIS MAY TAKE SEVERAL MINUTES.

Mr Not-so-steady,
I'd speak to the "few hundred" man personally (HBkahuna)!
Otherwise you're welcome to 'pm' me for further details. I consider myself all-knowing because my 14 year old son taught me first. :|
