Permalink L.A. the City for Surf Music

New Topic

In today's USA Weekend there's an article titled, "The top 10 places to hear the best of AMerica's music." Los Angeles was`listed as the best city for "SURF music." The article reads:

Pop culture exporter to the world, Southern California lists drive thru burger joints, romantic comedies, skateboarding and paparazzi stakeouts among its inventions. Another is surf music. AN amped up mix of rockabilly and R&B, the genre emerged in and around LA in the early 1960's, performed by and for surfers. DIck Dale, known as the King of the Surf Guitar, introduced a heavy reverb that captured the adrenaline rush of riding a pipeline. Bands like the Ventures and the Surfaries helped make the blissed-out music a coast-to-coast sensation with such hits as Walk Don't Run and Wipe Out. The Beach Boys softened the sound, added luscious vocal harmonies and made the style America's official soundtrack of summer. The best place to hear surf music and the sub-genres it spawned - from pop punk to skate rock - is still LA, where the sun is always shining and the next big wave is already building.

CUTBACK

Thats kind of funny they would write that since many parts of LA have turned into a third world country. The only place I know in LA with surf music from time to time is Surfari Sams ( others BTD?) but I couldn't even get the Surf Coaster & The Eliminators booked there which should tell you something.

Presently, ground zero for surf music seems to be the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum thanks to the efforts of Linda Miller.

There are lots of great surf bands around a 100 mile radius of LA but in LA proper? The number one radio station is LA is a Spanish language station.

Tim,
I see surf shows in LA alot......

will post some of the places later,
I'm heading out the door to meet ya for Breakfast.

Maybe you guys are taking it too literally? I would bet that when
they say L.A., they mean the greater L.A. metropolitian area,
including Orange county and the South Bay. When I head down to
Southern California for surf shows, I tell people that I'm going to
L.A., even if the shows are in Huntington Beach, Redondo, Hermosa,
El Segundo or wherever. The article absolutely should have said
"Southern California" instead of L.A. I equate what they're saying
to referring to drinking a Coke when you actually had a Pepsi or RC
Cola.

Bob,

I agree...

Like when I lived in San Jose in the 70's and people down here thought we lived in Frisco.

Danny,
its what they (the people who lived down here) called SF, not us.
guess I should have put quotations around it.
