Permalink Genre Confused.

New Topic

So to a newbie like me what are the groups and instro's that define the Genre and Sub-Genres.???

I've read articles and listened to lots of stuff and I'm still a bit confused about why certain groups are thought to capture 'Classic' surf sounds and yet sound so different to others that also capture a 'Classic' surf sound.

Are both the Ventures and Dick Dale classed as Classic or am I barkin' up the wrong tree ?

thanx in advance

Roger

i'm also a newbie to this and I have the same question you do voodoo.(that rhymed) I thought to have TRUE surf rock you have to use the fender tube amp with authentic reverb. No marshalls or crates here.(although I have a marshall too and it is a very nice amp.)Also the guitar has to be fender, either jazz master, jag or strat even(dick dale) Bands like los straitjackets are (awesome as they are) a sub genre surf rock because they use fender amps, but not fender guitars. I forget the make name but the model is dipinto. This is just my opinion though. The straitjackets are one of my favorite bands so I'm not knocking them they are out of sight, I just though to remain true surf rock you are required to use the above listed equipment. Rolling Eyes there's my 2 cents!!!

krakatoa

here's my two centavos:

  1. reverb (and/or "tremolo" and/or "vibrato" and/or "echo")
  2. twangy pickups and tremolo bridge
  3. instrumental arrangements

however you get there, it's surf to someone.

this is a way-basic description, super-broad and inclusive.

but, that's how i hear it.

First of all. Your sources that say the Ventures are a classic surf band have a shallow knowledge. They were around before, during and after the surf years. And recorded instrumental rock, country, psychedelic and SOME surf tunes.

Classic surfbands come from southern california, mainly orange county and the southbay. During 61-64.

Reducing it to amps and guitars is the MOST misleading route, anybody can get those!

The Exotic Guitar of Kahuna Kawentzmann

You can get the boy out of the Keynes era, but you can’t get the Keynes era out of the boy.

Phil has plenty on his site, http://www.reverbcentral.com look under 'articles' it's all a mighty fine read!

This was also discussed at length and many times too in the old yahoo groups. I just reread some of those (go to the old yahoo group and do a search on "what is surf" ... great stuff by dp, ferenc, Phil and many others.)
unfortunatly, those posts are not accesible for people who weren't on that list I think. Brian? are the archives open to new members of this forum?
from an "ingredients" point of view, my two cents are: reverb, clean singlecoils, instrumentals, simplistic verse-chorus kinda songstructures catchy melodies, double picking, whammy bar, surfer, hot rod, space and spy themes in presentation and song titles.
BUT: leave one or a few of these out and it's not necessarily not surf music anymore. a genre description is pretty much a (witgensteinian) group-qualification.
I elaborated in this post to one of the what is surf threads in the yahoo group: WARNING: it's a long and potentially very boring read Wink

I'm getting there slowly. Just a little worried about a related response on another thread aswell. If traditional surf rules are broken there does seem to be a negative reaction.

I have never tried to actually surf, and I live in the UK, at the moment it's warm ( but it won't last ) and I would like to feel that I'm part of a community and want to learn alot about this type of music. I play guitar alot and can add tons of Sci-Fi stuff to the music and I'd like that to be an acceptable approach.

Just clearing up.

you're refering to the 'shred-thread' right?

hey, whether it belongs to genre is completly different to whether (someone feels) it's good music - there's also no rule against incorporating differnet things into a style of music. But no matter how you look at it, trash metal with a trumpet will never be just 'trash-metal' - it will always be 'trash-metal with a trumpet' because that trumpet sticks out like a sore ... well, like a thumb anyway. and by the same token, surf with shredding will always be surf with shredding, and not just 'surf', even if you want to call it surf. 's got nothing to do with value judgements either, and it's not a negative reaction. (apart from that I'm allergic to shredding, but that's a purely personal preference Wink )

some are just more religious about trad. surf then others, and some are more vocal then others. guess what, not everybody on this forum agrees with everyone on every topic. no problem.

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

Read a lot of the articles already. Kinda cool history lesson. Just about resolved to trusting my ears and enjoying playing and listening instead of tryin to put the music in boxes.

Link Wray ain't surf by a country mile.....yet is on every essentials list.

Dick Dale started doing country aswell yet .....

aw I'm getting confused again.

Well either way I'm still happy with what I play and hopefully a bit of insight from you guys will help me.

Thanks again,
Roger

Definitely, and I'm sure myself and a few others would be willing to help. If you noticed the FAQ Module over on the left, I reference both you and Phil Dirt, but leave a placeholder for an official SG101 FAQ. It's probably quite an undertaking, but again, I'd be willing to help. It would be great if John Blair and Phil could contribute also.
