I'm intrigued....Which Amp Modeller do you use ?
I've got a Boss GT8 for the guitar, and although there's a big chunk of folks who would say it's not right to use a box of tricks, I like it. It's portable and has got some amazing sounds that would have cost me a small fortune to get if I'd got the original effects / amps it models.
Just curious ?

I have a Yamaha DG Stomp which is just OK. I thought it sounded pretty good in the store, but now I find the clean amp models pretty lame and flat sounding. Good enough for practicing, but I wouldn't record it.

The Boss GT8 can be a bit imposing to begin with but is capable of the most outrageous Sci-Fi effects. Perfect for Surf / Spy / Sci-Fi Music.

I use Amplitube, it came free with Sampletank. Itâs good for Wurlitzer and rhythm guitar in any case. No Showman, though.

What do you think of the GT8 distortion sounds? My son has a GT8, his only disappointment is the distortion sounds acting a bit funny under some circumstances (sorry, I don't have the details but I can get them).

BOSS makes some real good stuff...the GT8 (and the slightly older GT6) perform great. The two guitar guys I'm playing with in Forever Surf both use the GT8 to get pure surf tones. In addition to the BOSS digital effects and amp emulations, there is an effects loop to add your tank or other devices. A very versatile piece of equipment in my estimation.

Thanks I thought you guys would flame me for using my GT8.
Rather glad you didn't.
I dig deeper than most people into this stuff.
I've got some amazing Sci-Fi sounds out of it and got the FS6 extension switch for it, so you want a raygun blast tap a switch and 'Robert's your father's brother'

I HAVE A YAMAHA DG STOMP, AND I LIKE IT PRETTY WELL.
WHEN I BOUGHT IT, IT WAS (TO MY EARS) BETTER THAN THE
LINE 6 OR JOHNSON MODELLERS THAT WERE OUT THERE AT
THAT TIME. WE'RE TALKING ABOUT 4 OR 5 YEARS AGO. I SUS-
PECT THAT MODELLERS HAVE IMPROVED SIGNIFICANTLY SINCE
THEN. A MODELLER WILL NEVER TOP A GOOD TUBE AMP AND
REVERB TANK, BUT SOMETIMES WHEN YOU HAVE TO COMPRO-
MISE, THEY AREN'T A BAD ALTERNATIVE.

Good choice.
I've had a silly amount of pedals, amps and weird extras for my guitars over the years. Now I'm divorced and get to play guitar again. I'm back into teaching guitar again and wanted something to cover everything. The GT8 does that nicely.
Plus I can make the sound of Sebulba's PodRacer with it !!!

I was reading some reviews of this on Harmony Central and noticed several people reporting that it was impossible to get a really clean clean sound from the Tonelab. Would you agree?

I would never buy a modeller. Actually... the only one I would buy if you consider it a modeller is the Line 6 DL4. The one thing better than boutique pedal or vintage pedal is the reverse delay which is immaculate.
I'm not a huge pedal fan in the first place. I only own a clean boost and tuner pedal. If I had the money I would buy many more pedals though. I really need a nice delay/echo pedal, and it wouldn't be bad to have a nice overdrive pedal.

I'd rather not use a modeller, but most of the time I get to play is after my kid goes to bed, so it's headphones or nothing.
I guess the other options would be an amp or preamp with a decent headphone out or line out, or something like a Palmer speaker simulator used with my real amp.
Suggestions?

I was looking at the Digitech RP250. Seems decent. Anybody have any opinions?

For recording I use the ampcabpedalvocal models in Line 6 Gearbox in combination with Tone Port for everything I do from bass to vocals. Using the compliments I get on my tone as a basis I think the models I use are pretty dang good. Some would say it's "cheating" but for a guy without alot of time to mic amps and dial in gear its a great tool for recording. Good tone is good tone whether is comes from digital box or software or a nice boutique amp.
I never tell people what I use to record unless they ask and even the most staunch anti digital tone types I know compliment me on my recorded tone and inquire how I got it. Most are amazed when I tell them it's software. I think the key to modeling is to keep an open mind. Some people are disappointed when models aren't "exact". If I need some vintage style Brit tube OD I listen for what sounds good to my ears, which is often not necessarily the Marshall or VOX models. I say trust your ears not your brain or eyes as far as tone is concerned.
I do think software modeling is much better than a modeling amp like the VOX AD stuff. I had the AD50 and I hated that.

I been using IK Amplitube2 and it's great, however at NAMM I spoke with developer of Guitar Rig2. He had just seen Dick Dale for the first time and he really dug it. So I asked if he ever heard that sound using amp modeling and he said no. I think he's intersted in modeling that sound which would be cool.

Fender G DEC.
Modeling does only go so far, but it is a neat option, especially when you must headphone. It has really takin off over the last few years!
How bout all those little tube amps...every time I look theres another one out Lil Class A 5 watters everywhere.
Just hard to beat the real thing, but all those options in one box or pedal sure can be fun.

for quiet practicing, i the Roland MicroCube: but I don't use it for recording. Cool simulated amp sounds, cool emulated effects too.
