Hey DP what drums did you use on "zmudowski" - I think it's a real tight sound. Loops? Machine?
As far as my computer snobbery goes -just teasin' fellas. I'm actually interested to learn more. I'll try and keep non-windows users in mind next time.
you know...the drums for "zmudowski" are like all the drums on my stuff...they are made up of a sort of "collage" or "collection" of various bits and pieces that I have lying around the davestudio...
let's see if i can break it down a bit for you:
some of the drum riff is from an old cheesy loop kit called "CakeWalk Drum Tracks" from 1997 or so...the kick-ass drum breaks in that tune are actually pretty lame little Cakewalk loops stitched together...
there is some cool bongo action from the Boss DR-770 synced in with the Cakewalk/synth patterns.
Also some weirdo backwards drum track synced and looping through the MicroKorg sequencer...it makes some of the eery-squeeky groans and moans "sub-audible" noise stuff in the track...
Also some thump thump thump thumping extra-bassy bass drum from the Roland SPD-6 percussion pad...a very cool device...
and there's a rhythm acoustic guitar in the mix: if pretty much playing "beat on the acoustic guitar like it's a f*ckin drum" so that adds a bunch to the rhythmic drive...

Well, DP,
Sounds like you mixed a whole lot of chemicals together and out-popped a great beat! Thanks for sharing your alchemy secrets. Is this how you do your home cooking as well?
(for those interested DP's tune is found in here 2007 MP3 Comp number 18: http://www.archive.org/details/SG1012007MP3)

I would check out Addictive Drums
www.xlnaudio.com/ sounds great and easy on the CPU. Also there's DrumCore
www.submersiblemusic.com, I heard great about this one but never tried it. Ocean Way sounds insane but heavy on the CPU, http://www.oceanwaydrums.net/
I have also heard great things about BFD2 but have not worked with yet.

I bet theres a real lack of surf drum samples out there. It's been a while since i played with a pc/mac soft sequencer so not sure if there's now an easier way but here's a trick i picked up from a young techno programmer.
You need a software sequencer, a soft sampler program and a copy of Propellerheads Recycle.
Look through some surf CD's for a bar or so of drum beats or breaks that have no other music included and rip that snippet to a wave file. Recycle will detect the spikes in the wave form as drum hits and cut it into segments. Save as something your sampler will understand like REX2 or Soundfont.
Import into your sampler program and you should be able to play the drum beat on across a midi keyboard if you have one. I like to use my sequencer's midi editing grid screen and lay the notes out so it plays the whole sequence as original (the midi notes/dots take a diagonal shape across the grid) then move things around, take beats out or copy beats in. It helps if the BPM is somewhere near original, might also help if you finish off with a touch of distortion and delay to fizz things up slightly.
Ok.. You've got EZ-Drums so why bother with this? Open up a secondary midi track for EZ-drums and use the timing from the Recycled segments on the sampled track to build a new EZ-Drum track. For instance, if you've stolen a sample from Dusty Watson just use his timing only NOT the sound itself, use EZ-drums for the sounds.. any kit you like!
It's a lot of hard work but the possibilities are endless.

I use Acid Rock when I record, comes with drum loops. You can increase/decrease the BPM to suit your needs. You can also import other drum loops for use.
I got it as a gift many years ago, but I think there's a free version out there. I know there are also sites you can go to download drum loops to use.
I got a couple of surf drum loops from here

I use those too.
Here's the direct link;http://users.telenet.be/roland.bettenville/drums.html
I imported the midi files into Guitar Pro which turns them into tab which
you can edit. Then I saved it as a wav and imported it into Cakewake
Guitar Tracks. I tirmed it to be one bar long and aligned it to the time ruler.
Then if you apply "Edit->Groove-Clip Editing" you can use it like
any groove clip, you can change the tempo and repeat it over a number
of bars.

Hi Alan,
I never saw this post, but I did purchase the drum loops from the Steve's Springy Surf Drums, and they're exactly what I was looking for. I was just tired of making MIDI beats. Gad you enjoyed the Spring King autopsy.
Actually, I just recorded a new song, using Steve's drum loops, and of course the Spring King. The song itself is nothing special, probably sounds similar to a dozen other surf tunes, but I'm digging the drums.

If anyone would like to comment on the mix, I'd love to hear it. I'm never sure if I've got the levels right.
