I still have my first guitar, and it's the one my dad bought me new. It's a 1963 Harmony 1215 Archtone that I wanted because it was as close as I could get to the guitars played by Joe Negri, who I suppose was my first guitar hero because he was a good friend of my dad. Unhappily, its' bridge cable strings (that I laugh at now) and mile-high action were massive disincentives to practicing. These days, it's top is cracked at the f-holes, the neck needs a reset and also has a noticeable bow, but I occasionally play it for old-time's sake and it sounds great (for what it is) with bronze 13 flats.
If I'd asked Dad for one of the Harmony electrics instead, or a Teisco, maybe I never would have quit playing guitar? It was 46 years between lessons.
