I played in some friends' (non-surf) band a few years ago. Played bass and took on about a quarter of songwriting duties. That band broke up.
Last summer I went to a concert at which a younger band from my town covered one song I had written.
After their set was up, they approached me about it, nervously. This was compounded then by announcing that not only was I just "in that band" but I'd written that song.
They did a good job, too, and I let them know.
It was pretty much the same arrangement that my friends' band had worked out, but it's really different to listen to somebody else playing it, and not have an instrument in your own hands. Even if I'm listening to my own recordings, I'm usually still thinking of what the instrument felt like in my hands, while recording. I'm apperceptive about my own creative processes.

Hello?
I had noticed that a propos example, too!
I assume that in providing additional examples we are constrained to songs performed by or adapted by another surf (or instrumental) band first.
Locally the Beloved Invaders have worked hard to cover four or five different Slacktone songs, plus the Straitjackets' Pacifica. These always get good reactions, even though I'm fairly sure most of the people appreciating them are not familiar with Slacktone. (However, who knows. One way or another good taste is more common than you'd think.) My personal favorite is Daytona Mona, but they also do Tidal Wave, Birdbone, Rosarito Three Day and recently one or two others that aren't coming back to me.
The AquaSonics in their original incarnation - the first I knew, anyway - covered Heart Full of Soul as adapted by Planet Seven (a very beautiful and recognizable rendition) and Spanish Blue by the Aqua Velvets. They are currently doing a very nice Tide Pool Q (Torquays).
Planet Seven itself covers Guitar Beat by the Raybeats.
I'm less able to say what Get Three Coffins Covers, because they mine a vein that I'm not familiar with, but they definitely do some by Deadbolt. Recently I heard them do Tears & Gears (Satan's Pilgrims). The guitarists Gil & Adam are currently alternating on guitar and drums, but for this one they bagged the drums and used two guitars and bass (Jeff). Kind of a special moment, I thought.
Personally I'd love to hear some covers of the Bambi Molesters. Everyone knows that's good material - what gives?

Hello?
I was wondering about that.
Tuck, when a word is blue, it means it's a clickable link. In this case to a video I just posted of us playing a Nebulas song.

Our setlists are always sprinkled with covers, and luckily we have gotten from the original performers/writers when the opportunity presents itself. (so far, anyway... )
Example: We've played The Kaisers tune "Valley of the Kaisers" for years, and when we opened for Los Straitjackets during their "Twist Party" tour (amazing show, btw!) Kaiser George nodded and said we play it the way it should be played; tight and fast! Humbling high praise indeed!

I would be extremely flattered if a band covered one of my songs. We cover tunes from bands that move us. Covering is the highest form of flattery
I second Ryan's words!
We always tried to play some great songs by Los Straitjackets, The Mermen and Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet. It's a great way to analize how it was written and put together, learn an unknown fingering, understand the dynamics of a song.
One time my former band, Los Tornados opened to Daddy O-Grande. We played "Hornet's Nest". Well, I still don't know what he thought of it.

all we do is covers haha but that's because we havent worked on the greatest material ever! haha its just people kept asking us to play what we used to just play in the garage for fun at parties and whatnot, and since we havent worked on songs of our own yet we do our heros songs most of the time haha we really mean no harm in playing covers its just so fun to play them!!

What if a band covered your song and played it bad on purpose just to make your song look bad?

Not quite on purpose, but once a band I was in played a "punk" version of a middle of the road song - and who should turn out to be in the audience? The composer of the song came up after the show - he didn't seem quite as flattered as some of you.
I've had the small-town honour of friends using my songs in a couple of bands. I liked their versions better than my originals.

I THINK COVERS ARE VERY IMPORTANT IN SURF MUSIC, THE VENTURES THEMSELVES COVERED A LOT OF SONG AND MADE THEM CLASSICS.
WHEN YOU PLAY A SONG THAT HAS BEEN PLAYED BEFORE BY OTHER BANDS THE REALLY IMPORTANT THING IS THAT YOU PRINT YOUR OWN SOUND ON THAT SONG BUT KEEPING THE "SONG'S SOUL" UNTOUCHED.
AND MAYBE YOU COULD PLAY 1000 COVERS IN YOUR REHEARSAL OR AT YOUR HOME, BUT WHEN YOU PLAY IT IN SHOW, I THINK THERE MUST BE A GOOD REASON TO PLAY IT ... MAYBE BEACUSE IS THE FIRST SONG YOU LEARNED OR YOUR FAVORITE SURF LEYEND PLAYED IT .. I MEAN ANOTHER REASON BESIDES IT SOUND GEAT.

Just as covers are important in surf music, so is punctuation and proper use of capital letters in a web forum. Please try to type in a conventional style.
Thanks
