We just produced our debut CD back in October (Retroactive Gamma Rays - Activate! ). We used a lot of sound clips from movies (Damn the Man); new and old sound clips. We are selling our Cd on CDBaby & iTunes. Weather its the law or not I feel you can use a short clip from a movie and make it your own. It would take a real hard-on to go after a small indy surf band using a 10 sec. clip from their 2 hr. movie.
Go for it, it made our album much better in my opinion. When I talked to Disc Maker they said no to sound clips but yes to us "recreating" clips from movies using our own voices... so how are the to know if you can generate ambient sounds and have a remarkably similar voice to the voices from the sound clip your "recreating". We ended up getting our discs made @ SuperDigital.com out of Portland, Or. They were great & they didn't care about the sound bytes.
