I want to thank everyone that participated in and attended Java & Jet's Atomic Frolic on Sunday eve. We had a blast!
The Metrolites from the Quad Cities (IL/IA) kicked off the show. If you have not had the opportunity to see these guys...make a point of doing it. Their style runs the gamut of genres...surf, spy-fi, crime jazz, spaghetti western, rockabilly & lounge. They put on a great live show and finished with an over-the-top version of Miserlou with an incredible drum solo!

After the Metrolites kicked things off, local Champaign-Urbana jump-blues heroes Bruiser & the Virtues kept things rolling. They had the dance floor packed through their whole set.
image
Then it was time to welcome our mighty SG101 buddies the Madeira to the stage. They ripped through a great set of raucus desert surf tunes and kept the dance floor rolling through 3 encores!
image
At one point, Ivan divulged the secrets behind the Madeira's millenia-old Mediterranean mysteries and performed a hilarious comedy routine...
image
Seriously guys, great show! Sorry we made you play so long (no worries...we had the oxygen tanks standing by). By the way, it was the "Midwest Surf Guy" that made me kept getting up on the microphone and requesting more tunes. And don't worry Ivan, you did not break the Sinatra rule...cause the audience still wanted more!
Oh and one last thing...what do you get when a surf/tiki guy like me does an event with a vintage/pin-up guy like Java (www.javasbachelorpad.com)? Something like this...

Sounds like a good time Jet. I'm sorry I could not make this one. I had to miss this one and the Surfaris last month and I'm pretty bummed about it.
How are the Metrolites? Would a surf fan appreciate them?

They were definitely a good fit for the Atomic Frolic as they played such a range of music fitting the mid-century vibe. They are a self-described soundtrack band (they do soundtracks for movies that don't exist...as in the theme song for the non-existent film: "Gunfight at the Zombie Mineshaft"). They did play all the genres that I listed in with the pictures above (including breaking out a polka). I would say that my closest comparison would be Seks Bomba (oh damn, and there is another band that is escaping me).
They do put on a great live show and have a big following in the Quad Cities. There is a big buzz about them in Champaign right now coming from the people that saw them. They appealed to a wide audience, most likely due to the variety of music they played and their stage presence.
Would a surf fan like them? I do....but the music is, for the most part, not surf. As they cover so many genres, I definitely gravitate to certain songs over others (I prefer their Spy-Fi stuff...namely the title track of their first CD, "The Man from M.E.T.R.O."). They have a new CD coming out soon. Anxious to hear that.

Sounded like a great event.
As much as I like to see a Multi surf band show. I know that a varried style music show appeals to a wider audience. And for tiki and hot rod shows this seems to be happening alot, more often. Maybe surf will keep growing as it gets out to wider audiences.
What was the deal with the chick with the Coconut top and grass skirt?was she dancing to tribal tunes???
if so, very nice.....
Keep up the great work,

I had a great time! You really pulled of a fantastic show! here are my pictures, but I took more video than pictures. I have not checked to see if it came out.
Here are my pictures http://web.mac.com/guymoore/iWeb/Site/Photos.html
Ivan and th Madeira were called back to play more songs at least 3 times, the crowd loved them! Lots of folks were dancing the their songs. The Madeira was fantastic! Desert Surf Rock Forever!
The Metrolites were really different a mixture of surf/rock/funk/lounge. They were really good, they were quite theatrical with synchronized movements and the Sax & Guitar player went into the crowd. The sax player even slid about 30 feet through the crowd on his back with the guitar player hovering over him. They did some vocals and instrumentals.
Bruiser and the Virtues are a swing band they really go the dancing in full swing! They did a great job, really professional and polished.
Java and Jet had Burlesque, skits and prizes between each band! It was really great!
Java & Jet thanks for putting on such a great show!

Actually, the tune was "Night of the Tikis" by the Tiki Tones. The story was read while the scene played out on stage.
As the story goes, she was a lonely and frustrated island girl living on the Isle of 'Paign' (shortened from Champaign) in the cornfield sea. She cried to the towering, monolithic god statue of Corn-Tiki to take her away to an exotic land full of cocktails, fast cars and killer surf music!
image
Mourning her lame existence, she danced frantically with hopes of waking the sleeping entity that lie within...her frantic antics increased in desperation aided by the chants of "Corn-Ti-Ki" from the crowd.
image
Soon the eyes of the statue began to pulse in unison with the chants and fire (in the form of confetti) spewed from its mouth. Then, Corn-Tiki incarnate appeared and wisked her away to her frolicky destination...
image
Oh, and then the Madeira came on-

No, no...no problem at all. In fact, I wouldn't even mind if you edited me out of the video.
