Permalink First REAL Surf LP Trivia Question

New Topic

I know, I know, Surfer's Choice by Dick Dale, but I got to thinkin', what was the first full length lp that actually contained all instrumental, reverb laden surf? The way a lot of surf albums are made now in hindsight...
I don't know the answer yet, my first guess is one of the Del Fi bands-maybe Surf Rider by the Lively Ones? Remember, no vocal numbers.
Go!

PS I apologize if the answer is like a well-known fact and I'm just an idiot, but I was racking my brain and kept coming up with albums with the mandatory vocal numbers.

Wow, that's a tough one! Almost all of them have at least one vocal thrown in.

This is one of the earliest I can remember- I bought it new in around 1964, and still have it.

And before anyone says, "The Ventures" are not a surf band, they certainly were on this album. They played a lot of surf - they just played other instrumental stuff too.

I'm going with Bob Vaught and the Renegaids - Surf Crazy - Released Jan 1, 1963.

It's the oldest one I have -

I can't remember if the Challengers first album is all instro or not. If so, It would be older.

Yeah, "Surfing" by the Ventures released in May 1963. And I personally consider them a surf band on this album. But Surf Rider by the Lively Ones was released in Feb/March of 63 and with the Lively Ones renaming of "Spudnik" to "Surf Rider" and having some success with it, I believe that Ventures "Surfing" was a response to it. The Ventures included the renamed Surf Rider on the album as if to say-hey, this is our song!

I didn't realize Surf Crazy was that early. Great lp. I got it too.
According to wikipedia, "Surfbeat" by the Challengers also came out during Jan 1963.

I once saw a recent video on The Ventures website with Don Wilson doing an intro at an outdoor Seattle concert stating that Surf Rider was written by Nokie Edwards. In this video, you can see a disgusted Nokie look back to Leon Taylor as if to say "Im waiting, get with it, let's get started"

Surf Rider/Lively Ones I believe
Surfer's choice btw had no reverb on it

Did Surf Beat by Challengers really have vocals?

The Exotic Guitar of Kahuna Kawentzmann

You can get the boy out of the Keynes era, but you can’t get the Keynes era out of the boy.

Did Surf Beat by Challengers really have vocals?

No, it's all instrumental, it qualifies.
So far Surf Crazy by Bob Vaught & The Renegaids and Surf Beat by the Challengers are vying for first, with the edge going to Surf Crazy for having the confirmed release date of 1/1/63, while all we know for now is that Surf Beat was released during Jan of 63.

That's BS. Don't listen to Dick - listen to your ears! There's HEAVY reverb all over that record. Dick has gotten confused somewhere along the way about this, or he's pushing a particular agenda.

What record retailers were open on New Year's Day back in 1963, before 24-hour supermarkets and when most shops were closed on Sundays? Seems weird.

I remember reading that it was Surfbeat by the Challengers.

but also,
remember that the Bob Vaught and the Challengers are not the rippin drippin rerverb surf also.

I looked up release dates in the Bob Dalley Book - "Surfin' Guitars" and the Challengers 'Surf Beat' shows released 11/62...

The book only says 1962 for the Bob Vaught and the Renegaids 'Surf Crazy' album.

I don't know that I trust any source for any of these dates, however. I agree with Ivan - 1/1/63 is a strange date to release an album - sounds made up.

I think Bob Vaught is still around, and Richard Delvy is - I say we let them settle it the old fashioned way, willow branches and whittlin' knives. Laughing

"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been"

This is a pretty good question with a surprising answer. The first all-instrumental surf music LP was "Surfer's Stomp" by The Mar-Kets on Liberty. April, 1962!

The next two LPs to follow suit were The Challengers' "Surfbeat" and Dick Dale's "Surfer's Choice." The most accurate release dates for these two, so far, are October and November, 1962, respectively. Bear in mind that they were released DAYS (maybe hours) apart. Who knows which one was in the stores first?

Bear in mind, also, that it's the SECOND pressing of The Challengers' 1st LP that qualifies here. The 1st pressing included one vocal, a cover of "Surfin' Safari"; the 2nd pressing replaced it with an instrumental version. That could imply a later release date than "Surfer's Choice" for the 2nd pressing. Discuss...

Surfer's Choice has vocal numbers galore, though. That's why I mentioned it in the original question. Doesn't count. So if the rest of your information is correct, Surfers Stomp would be first followed by the 2nd pressing of Surf Beat with the all instrumental line up of songs.

Jeff, as far as "rippin and drippin" is concerned, why impose some phrase you and your buddies made up a few years ago on 1962? Sounds like someting that happens after a bad burrito.

Ted,
your the one who said all instrumental and (Reverb Laden) surf.

so if thats the case I would say Probably the Lively Ones,
as the ones listed so far.
and yeah the Markets too.
were far from real surf in my opinion.

Speaking of Surf Crazy -- it has never been reissued on CD, has it? Does anyone know if it might be in future?

But the first Challengers album definitely had reverb. So, why the Lively Ones rather than the Challengers?

I'd have to go back and listen to it again,
I always considered the Challengers a studio band,
and little or no reverb sound.
But I guess I'm wrong.
