here's a real curiosity.... form the early sixties when many dutch beat groups worked in Germany (just ike the beatles in Hamburg) ... the weeird and somewhat disturbing collaboration between Dutch Indorock band the Javalins and some local german singer. you dont have to speak german to figure the lyrics out

It is a curiosity. However, Paul Kuhn was not a local singer, but a nationally well known musician. Hes still alive and this song was his only excursion into Schlager territory.
The LP shown at the beginning is highly recommended for Indo fans.

Yes, I meant entire Germany with "local". I was saying that to the US people.I think he was known in the Netehrlands as well. I dont think the version with the Javalins is particular schlager. reminds me a bit of the beatles/Tony Sheridan songs actually.
the only schlager song? I havent heard the flipside of the single but "bier bier bier ist die Seele vom Klavier" makes me expect the worst. just kidding.
My point was the merger of styles and of backgrounds of artists, and also how these indobands form the sixties could be the wild keep your daughters at home kind of r&r one minute, and than be all siruppy sweet mainstream pop the next. exciting times!

Jeff,
I'm surprised you don't know about Primo. Their vintage Aloha shirts are highly sought after, since they also used the Iron Cross in their logo.
Here's a shot of a remake. Da best kine brew.

Heres a video where an Indo-rocker talks a bit about Germany and being indonesian in the netherlands during the sixties.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=94YjWtsdyA8
Thinking about it we werent bad: having the Star-Club, with all the Merseybeat and R&R stars and Kaiserkeller and Top-Ten in Hamburg alone. Then there were the ex-GIs like the Monks in southern Germany, and the Indos in western Germany (Cologne area) and the Sputniks and Frank Echo Quartet in East Germany. You sure could get your rocknroll fix if you looked around a little.
edit:
This is the one where a guy talks about the young indonesian guys in Holland.

I have a record somewhere with a band playing on the dunes with Höfners and dutch girls dancing. I think its called Beach Party. Cant remember the name of the Indo-band right now, sorry.

From what I get for the dutch bands in the 60's, they were ver focussed on germany, lots of chances to be a working musician, sort of the "promissed land", much more than the US and UK like it is now.
edit: now Ive watched the videos what a cool find, thanks for posting that, I dnever seen those though I know those guys (not personally, alas)

Ted,
I have a dark Blue Primo shirt.
I was asking Wannes what the translation was?
as somebody posted a song similar on Tiki Central and it was saying there is no good beer in Hawaii. from a German perspective of course.

the direct translation is "there is no beer on hawaii", NOT "there is no GOOD beer on hawaii."
O/T of course there's the problem of 'regulative prescriptions' v. 'constitutive prescription' - a distinction mostly not commonly made but highly relevant! constitutive prescriptions would precribe what beer is .... regulative prescriptions attach a normative label..... for example, in the famous bambi-on-the-ice scene from the disney movie where bambi keeps falling flat on his face, is Bambi skating badly, or is he skating not at all ????????
by the same token, what is beer, is it a tasty light alcoholic beverage, than untasty beer is no beer at all. is it a drink brewed according to some particular recipe, than it might be beer even if it tastes like horsepiss. just bad beer, cause "tasty" would be a regulative prescription and not a constitutive one like in the first case.
and then there's the problem of the Reinheitsgebot, which was still valid law at the time of this song, meaning no additives allowed in beer. so beer not brewed according to the reinheitsgebot could not legally be sold in Germany. which might or might not mean they'd call non-reinheitsgebot-beer beer.
so the utterance "es gibt kein Beer auf Hawaii" might mean "there's no beer on Hawaii", it might also mean "Primo tastes like horsepiss" (Im not saying it does, Im just hypothetically saying that's what Paul Kuhn could have meant. Im not saying he did mean that either)
you see, German is a very difficult language.

Its hard to explain the song in serious terms. Its a drinking song and doesnt mean to speak the truth, but being a music to drink by.
