In a similar vein to my recent topic post and still-going thread, I had this thought in the middle of my work day today
How about, WHAT NON-SURF SONG (I am thinking a vocal song) would you like to hear 'SURFED UP' (i.e., played as a SURF INSTRUMENTAL; NO VOCALS).....and add to that, what SURF ARTIST would you like to hear perform it?
Here are some all-over-the-place conceptual ideas I had to kick off this Topic Thread
1) 'DON'T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD' (The ANIMALS classic), as done by, either THE GHASTLY ONES, or maybe GEIN & THE GRAVEROBBERS
2) 'WHOLE LOTTA LOVE' (LED ZEP), as done by CHUM, THE RAZORBLADES or THE PYRONAUTS
3) 'I'M NOT IN LOVE' (10cc), as done by THE AQUA VELVETS (think about it....I can hear MILES noodling on it right now)
4) 'DREAMWEAVER' (GARY WRIGHT), as done by THE MERMEN
5) 'I GOT MY MIND SET ON YOU' (GEORGE HARRISON), as done by SLACKTONE (with a heavy DUSTY intro!)
OK
enuf out of me
I think this could be fun
let's see if I am right

I want to cover Karma Police in a big(for surf music) studio production.
I want Fall From Grace by the Gentle Waves covered by the Space Cossacks if that were possible, but I don't think it would fit in as a Madeira song, so I guess I want Laika to cover it.
The Love I'm Searching For by the Rentals covered by Bambi Molesters with guest keyboardist.
And more, but I already feel stupid for listing what I have. I want every song I love covered in a decent manner by as many bands as possible.

I tend to like psychedelic covers, so I'd be content to hear the Mermen or Pollo Del Mar lay their hands on anything. I've also always wanted to hear Daikaiju do some covers, because I've never heard them do any and I just feel like they would own.
Personally, I tend to think of just about every musical genre in terms of surf, so I'm often analyzing how songs I encounter could be "surfed-up." I've challenged myself to try and cover a couple of songs by the oudist Anouar Brahem, only one of which I've begun to get a handle on, and also some traditional Nicaraguan folk song I've got on a cd I bought down there last summer. All three songs are instrumental, so a lot of the work is already done for me, but they've still got me pulling my hair out.
On second thought, maybe I should just hand those oud songs over to the Madeira.

Id like to hear Dick Dale do Black Eyed Peas' Pump it.
other than that, surf as a style isnt really suitable for doin' non-surf songs. the typical surf guitar simply doesnt work well for vocal melodies, cause it lacks the abilty to make long tones and to build on tones. and 99.9% of vocal melodies in pop music are simply not strong enough to be remotly intersting if you leave away the particularities of the voice. (Radiohead is a prime example Karma police, great song, but the melody on guitar sans the lyrics? ) pop music is all about the voice of the singer imo. Exceptions would be barbershop and jazz standards which lend themselves very much for instrumental guitar-versions (Chet Atkins) alas, too mellow for surf imo, euro instro maybe. The ventures, having a guitartone and techniqie pallate (sp?) way beyond surf, can make it happen sometimes (love potion nr. 9) but even they have some pretty weak ones.
I just rather hear good instrumetal songs.
my two cents.

I'm a big fan of hearing different instrumental styles covered in surf, but for the most part I find vocal covers to sound pretty lame. It's hard for them to stay interesting.

I stole a melody line from a Sinatra tune call "come fly with me" fifties big band is much more melody driven then pop. I've been working on a Gershwin surf tune as well.

Insanity makes it work; bomboraboy already mentioned My Heart Will Go On by Los Straits, which works because it's channeled through Telstar.
So let's hear Los Straits channel the Simpson theme thru the Munsters theme.

For a song to translate into surf, it must have a great melody. A lot of those blues songs rely more the singer's vocal inflection than on melody.

A lot of rock/pop song are very monotone, as I found out when tried to convert Blitzkrieg Bop into an instrumental.

I'm sorry, but you'll never hear surf music again
Actually, we made a go at that (great) song at one of our earliest practices. I guess it is still on our "To do" list. The Insect Surfers nicked the main theme for their song "Third Stone". And the Mermen have done "If Six Was Nine" live.

That line was exactly the reason I thought of a surf cover of the song.

I'm working on Lieutenant Kiji's theme by Prokofiev. That piece was made for surf.

And Dick Dale covered "Third Stone..." too. The Surf Kings also sneak the melody in towards the end of... some song on "Coming Up For Air." I can't remember which right now, but it's a cool little nod to Hendrix in there.
