This might help him make him feel better.
Fire up your amp and play, play with passion, play with conviction, then play for what you're worth....then turn it up louder. Don't be shy. Dick will hear the roar of the guitars.
Crazy idea:
Pick a time/date for everybody to amp up and power a BIG E chord for support.
1,000,000 guitars at once.....wow.
— Reverb for everybody, on the house.

All the Strats, all the Showman amps with JBL speakers, and all the Reverbs at once. It would be epic!
Good idea!

I was actually thinking if something along thelines of that mega "smoke on the water" they did a while ago. Can you get all guitarists with reverb in Cali to join somwhere for a massive Miserlou? - or better yet "king of the surf guitar"?
seriously, HBISM shows arent going right bnow are they? something like that would be a good oppertunity to do such a thing....

My heart is black, and my lips are cold
Cities on flame with rock and roll
Three thousand guitars they seem to cry
My ears will melt, and then my eyes....
Get Well Dick!

HBISM is working on a tribute to DD and what you suggested would be a great idea....Prolly cause California to fall off into the ocean though but what a way to go....Dick is actually doing well enough that he is working the Dean Markley booth at NAMM in Anaheim this weekend...what a guy! he had chemo & radiation this morning and then off he went to be at NAMM...Perhaps all our shows should feature each band playing their version of Miserlou during Surfin Sundays....Food for thought....God bless...Keep sending Dick the email wishes, he loves them...Linda

Well Freddie as Dick would say youbetchya...I think if all the surf bands who play for me at the museum did do Miserlou I might get sick of hearing it but I doubt it...A couple of years ago we did a "Mister Moto" round robin changing lead guitars 10 times and it was great...We featured Paul Johnson himself, Chantays, Gil Orr & Bobby Spickard, Surf Kings Tom Stanton, Reventlos Matt Quilter, Detonators Rob Woolsey, Royaltones Rich Knight, Slacktone Dave Wronski, Surfaris and former Dick Dale bass player Ron Eglit & Insect Surfer Dave Arnson...I guess I should seek out the picture I have of all of them and submit it to this site...Anyway I only feature surf bands cause that's what I feel should be representing the International Surfing Museum....It's a big part of the surf culture...Take care...Catchya off line...Your friend Linda

So, to keep an interesting idea alive, when would be a good day and time for an E-yowl of that sort? I suppose it ought to coincide with something - an anniversary in DD's life, maybe, or perhaps less mystically and more practically, it should coincide with something relevant going on at some place like the International Surfing Museum.
I might even do an E on my old Yamaha acoustic at about that time, out on the western plains, if that wouldn't be out of place. It's one of the ones I used to know.

Well Tuck I think and E yowl on any instrument would suffice seeing as though Dick can play any instrument known to man...If it helps 13 is Dick's lucky numer and May 4th which is a Sunday this year, is his birthday so if we did something based on those concepts it might be significant...Not sure when our tribute at the International Surfing Museum will be but I can post it on this site when we get the details worked out and make plans from there...Linda

Linda, when does Dick finish his chemo rounds? He may be finishing up soon? I remember feeling amazing after I finished my treatment, although I know realized I was in awful shape judging by pictures but they had me on so many steroids and drugs I felt high. Now, looking back I haven't been 100% in many years. I hope memory and numbness aren't a problem for Dick. I had little feeling in my fingers and left foot for several weeks after chemo and my memory/attention span is better than it was last year at the time but still not great. I would forget songs in the middle of them.

Jake I am so sorry to hear you are still having troubles...Hopefully in time things will get better and you will learn how to work around those difficulties....Dick is approximately a slight bit less than half way thru his first set of 6 weeks chemo & radiation treatments...He feels pretty good most of the time with only one round of sickness but intense pain from the tumor resting on the nerves in his spine...He doesn't seem to be worse for the wear but his treatments don't include steroids or drugs.....I've only heard him complain about pain but not numbness or memory loss...Perhaps you need to create a book of the songs you play and keep it with you just in case...I know it's difficult to do but try to give yourself enough time to heal fully, try to be patient with what has happened and don't worry so much...Negatives and worry kill off red blood cells faster than anything known to man...Take care and God bless...much love Linda

He told me this morning everything at NAMM and the 2 shows he did for Fender were fantastic...He feels great but has considerable pain from the tumor resting on the nerves in his spine...and you're right he does look good and he remains strong as an ox and maintains a positive attitude...Linda
