New member, sorry--that's what it sounds like. I am just now trying to branch out into advanced guitar techniques, and am into DD, The Ventures, Rockabilly, SCOTS, Cramps, Calexico, Friends of Dean Martinez, etc. These are all bad apples from the same twisted jazz roots in my book.

I also like low brow art, cartooning, and hot rods (though I no longer have any antiques). I have refinished a dozen or more electrics and now have a few archtops, and a Tele Deluxe.

East coast surf!

cheers

Chris

Welcome aboard Chris. Those are all great bands. There's a fair amount of discussion on here about guitar refinishing from time to time, it'll be good to have your experience to add to it. Is lowbrow art akin to thrift store art?
I love that stuff.

Are the Reverend Horton Heat and Los Straitjackets in your collection as well? I like what you have listed, great music.

Welcome aboard. From what I can tell everyone here is friendly (I'm new here myself).

Welcome. I'm a relatively new member myself and also from the DC area (NoVA).

The Cramps absolutely rule! I saw them back in 1992 (Leap Day, Feb. 29).
The Reverend Horton Heat opened for them (and, I hate to admit, blew
the Cramps out of the water!).

But the Cramps put on a great set, too. Lux's performance was downright
disgraceful, including stripping naked, wearing women's high heels (and
panties on his head), and drinking a gallon of wine. Good stuff!

I'm about 2 1/2 hours north of you, near Altoona, Pennsylvania. Even
in THIS landlocked part of the Commenwealth there are surf fans!

Welcome!

Vincent

Is this something you can share with the rest of us, Amazing Larry?!?

Like everyone above said.

Horton Heat is one of my all-time favorites, and he puts on a killer show. I have to admit an unrequited love for Gretches.

The one Cramps show I saw had Lux taking his boots off and pouring sweat out onto the stage. he then wrung his sock out, and threw it--dripping, into the audience. People excitedly grabbed for it, then were repulsed once they had time to realize what they were doing.

I like the element of humor in songs, but it is difficult for something to be funny and not age more quickly. I think the natural perception is to not take them seriously as music. But if you think about Cole Porter (and even some country) it can be done.

Is lowbrow art akin to thrift store art?

No, it isn't. Two well-known lowbrow artists today are SHAG and Coop. Another one is Miles Thompson, who did the cool front cover painting for our album:

Klas, I thought that style on your album cover art looked familiar.
Do you know that Miles has some of his work in the Tiki Ti now?

I have seen him there and talked to him a bit a few times also.

sorry for Off Topic

I don't think this is going off-topic since the original poster mentioned he had an interest in lowbrow art.

I didn't know that but I know he likes to visit the place. He's also represented in some cool books like "Beatsville" and the recent "Tiki Modern".

Yeah, definitely could be!

Welcome, Helldaddy! Good to see a fellow SCOTS fan! They are one of my favorite bands...Definitely top 5. DD, The Ventures, and the Cramps are awesome, too. Great taste all around.

SG101 is a great place, so stick around. Rock

By the way, my username is taken from a SCOTS tune... Cool
