Hey Kids, it's Rick from Rickshaw Records...
Perhaps you've heard a bit about my new compilation project, but now is the time to reveal the details, and invite bands to join the project.
Earth Surfing (Tentative working title)
A compilation of original instrumental Surf Music, with each song done in a specific style representing a geographic or political region on Earth, and employing native or regional instruments to accent the "surf" sound.
Bands choose the region, then write an original song to submit for the project.
Song titles will be reflective of that region (i.e. "_Caribbean Nights_" "_Mt. Fuji_" or "_Madrid_") so that when somebody picks up the CD, they'll have an idea of what the record will sound like based on the collection of song titles.
A minimum of 15 bands are needed to press CD's, with maximum of 74 minutes of music from as many bands as I see fit to fill the time.
ZERO COST to the bands, and each band gets 25 CD's for being on the comp. An August deadline for final mixes is firmly planned.
See the details in a PDF document at:

Hey Mon!
The fine print in the online PDF is: You can claim your region ASAP, but I need a demo to commit you to the project - even a boombox demo of a rehearsal, or a 4-track test with a drum machine and Casio synth regional instruments.
If your demo is good and has potential to kick-ass, I'll write you in permanently for that region.
If someone's demo really sux, I might make suggestions for improvement (not the quality of the recording, but the arrangement of the song) or if they claim a region but don't ever submit a demo, then their region goes back up for grabs sometime in a few months...
So, let's say MARCH 31 is the deadline for a scratch demo of your song. That's 3 months. You can probably do it in a weekend in your rehearsal room. Besides it's the middle of Winter now... Time to write new surf music for your Summer gigs!

Hi Rick, yeah I'm a dork. I was at work and didn't have time to read the .pdf yet. I initially was thinking that Meshugga Beach Party could do a cover of Israelites by Desmond Dekker, but then I saw the no cover policy, which I understand completely. Meanwhile, Tony in the TomorrowMen used to play in a ska band so that style would work for that band too.
This looks like a great project and hopefully we'll make the cut.

It's now just 2 days later, and 18 bands have expressed interest - including some who have already produced scratch demos and sent them to me.
(But nobody has requested the Far East or anywhere in Africa yet!!)
Here's a helpful tip: Google "_traditional instruments of >your region<_" to get an idea of what native sounds to put in your song.
Thanks to Tiki Tena who forwarded this SG101 post and the Myspace bulletin around the globe.

I posted a world map showing which regions have been asked for here:
www.rickshawrecords.com/earthsurfing/worldmap_bands.jpg
It's kind-of interesting to see how diverse the surf sound can really be!
We're a little thin in the Asia and South American regions, so if your band is undecided, please consider one of these regions.

Let me know if you can use it..

Just a reminder that if your band is one of the 30+ bands who wants to be a part of the 2008 Rickshaw Records compilation "_Earth Surfing_" , I'll need a scratch demo from you by March 31.
