Permalink Guitar Stripping...

Any tips on how to strip off the faux sunburst lamenant on a Jap. reissue?

It's cracked which lends itself to scrapping it off but that's proving to be quite tedious.

Thanks,
Spanky

Hi, Spanky,

I assume you are talking about Rip's Jag? If so, it has the short-lived "Foto Flame" finish, which is a faux wood overlay that is similar to a very thin wallpaper, with a clear urethane topcoat. In the mid-90's I had a Japanese Jazz Bass reissue that was in this finish.

I've never stripped a Foto Flame Fender, but for a Strat I refinished a few years back I used Klean Strip aerosol stripper which is available at Home Depot or Ace Hardware. This stuff will take the finish (and probably the foto paper) off down to the wood, but you might have to do the strip work 2-3 times.

The body wood on this guitar is probably basswood, which is relatively soft. Use a plastic scraper/putty knife to avoid gouging the wood. Before repainting, the bare wood will need to be sealed. Actually, an auto body shop can do the prep and refinishing work pretty inexpensively, in any automotive color you like. As you probably know, most if not all of the Fender custom colors were '50's-'60's car colors.

Hope this helps!

I scored a heat gun today which cut through it like butter. The edges are causing a little more trouble but nothing that can't be over come.

If I screw it up completely, I'll take it to a pro, but for now I'm going DIY.

Thanks,
