In a perfect world...... The Eliminators performing in front of a full house at Molly Blooms in San Clemente Ca. winter 2006. Photo By Rich Kirkpatrick.

Wow...that does look like a fun gig. Great band...Lots of happy people in the crowd...and most of 'em girls.

Indeed! It makes me wish I was there. Smile

I disagree. While the gig looks like fun it wouldn't be my ideal show. My two favorite surf shows are Satan's Pilgrims and The Surf Coasters. Both in packed clubs.

My problem with gig you posted was it is too light, small stage, and it seems more like people showed up not for the band but for the venue. In a perfect world people show up for the band. It is great having people enjoy the music but having everyone in the audience be just as much into the band as you are is amazing. Something like a Pearl Jam or Grateful Dead concert.

Obviously it looked like a great gig for the Elminators but it isn't perfect in my opinion. And it isn't how I think surf shows should be if surf is to ever get anywhere near the mainstream again.

You're right Jake...not a lot of stage ambiance. But, matching guitars, helium balloons, and dancing girls. Now, that's a party!!!

Careful Ben, those balloons might have hydrogen in them and could be a disaster in waiting. Some guy goes to light a cigarette for one of the ladies and next thing you know you have a bald lady. That's a travesty, not a party.

Jake you are so wrong on all your assumptions.

The people were there for the band, it was a party thrown by a surf board company, also the Chantays and Duotones were there too.
But the Eliminators got everybody up and dancing.

The place was way darker than in that pic.
that was the flash that lit it up.

the only down side was all the ladys were 40 plus and married.

In my experience there’s much potential in playing to a crowd of people who are surf virgins or don’t know your band. Being there means they’re open minded, something you can’t say about every jaded surf fan. They are out to party - not to take notes or compare acts. Maybe your’s is the only surf band they will ever see - you will stand out in their memory, they will tell their great-grand-children about that night! Some might be converted, a percentage might even buy some surf music in the future!!!

You can get the boy out of the Keynes era, but you can’t get the Keynes era out of the boy.

I assumed it was a restaurant/bar gig or something like that. Wrong as usual.

well it was a bar that serves a limited menu, but thats on a other side, this was the music hall side.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Jeff(bigtikidude)

I meant the restaurant/bar hired the band to play as opposed to it being a bill of music.

The surf board company hired the bands and had the party at the place, the place dint hire the bands.

Jeff(bigtikidude)
a show is a show, tons of people there, lots dancing, beter than most surf shows with 5 people standing there with hands in pockets.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Ha, that 5 people standing with their hands in their pockets is why I thought it wasn't a standard, for up in Seattle anyways, gig.

Well I see,
1. A surf band playing.
2. A goodly number of people doing what appears to be having fun dancing ( as apposed to just standing there with a zombie look on their faces)
3. ballons on the sealing representing a party.
4. People seem to be happy and smiling.
5. I see a band having a good time, and that's what playing music for other people is all about.

So I see a perfect surf show.

The size of the show doesn't even count when most of 1-5 of the above is in effect.

so there!

Joel

Looks like a fun show to me. Of course any concert would benefit from some cages on the sides with dancing girls inside, but hey, that Eliminators show looked like a blast.

Sean

I'm just saying not perfect. I never meant bad, but who wouldn't want a Rendezvous Ballroom show, Nightriders at the Whiskey, Any Bambi Molesters shows, or anything like that?

Contrary to some of the uninformed comments by those who were not there, best gig I been to in some time. Great vibe, nothing but good attitudes, no negative waves. Thanks for setting then record straight Jeff.

the only thing that would have made that show any better would be
Free Rum, and Naked ladys dancing all around.
oh and a hammock

I can think of a few more things but I'd get banned & rightfully so.

So no arguments against there being the slightest possibility of better surf shows? Let us raise the bar and bring surf back to the mainstream.
