The colour? is silver a good colour for a surf guitar in the U.S.? I don't know, I suppose I'm just used to seeing those Mosrite's in the sunburst scheme.

Traditionally No, Silver is not a common color for surf guitars,
but dont tell Rick and Willy B of CHUM that.

Silver is definitely a surf guitar color. I think any of the Fender custom colors can be considered surf guitar colors. Inca Silver, it was even a reissume color.

I think vintage Inca Silver looks great, I'm not a big fan of a brand new inca silver finish. Doesn't have the wear yet, although they will look great in a decade or two.

I really don't like how that Wilson's brother looks. I think they are hideous and silver doesn't help that. The carve is abysmal.

I love my Wilson Bros VM65. It has a standard Strat style trem. It surprises me that the VM110 uses the same el-cheapo floating Jag style trem that is on the Eastwood High Flyer, Turser Mosrite clones, etc. The arms are too short and have a weird feel. Considering the cost, they could do better.

Seems awfully high priced for a korean guitar. Especially seems high when you can get on direct for $499.

Nice looking guitar, but I would but the money on a MIJ Jag first and still have a little cash in pocket.

a vm-110 model is more expensive than the vm-65 model.

The Wilson guitars may look somewhat like a Mosrite, but that's where the comparison ends. The necks are thick, the pickups don't sound or play anything like a Mosrite, and the build and material quality don't even come close. I find it interesting that a guitar (Mosrite) that never had what would be called great success in comparison with Fenders, still has people making copies and has had for over 35 years. The Japanese (Filmore and Mosrite of Japan) have made great copies of the original Mosrites (I have 2) while all the rest just seem to be cheap knock offs. I understand that not everyone has the resources to buy a Japanese copy, or even an original, but before I would spend $5-900 for a Mosrite look alike I'd by something like a MIJ Jaguar or Jazzmaster and spend the few extra dollars to upgrade the electronics and have a tried and true real surf guitar.....but, each to his own.

I don't think the Wilson Bros. guitars could look any less like a mosrite. Even upside down they still wouldn't look right and would be amongst the worst(from an aesthetic standpoint) copies.

I really dig the Wilson Bros VM110, it's got a Mosrite vibe and hot pickups but it doesn't really play like a Mosrite at all, it's closer to a Jazzmaster in terms of the feel and playability esp neck & trem. But then, I never really liked the super-thin neck and super-low action of the Mosrite. If you're looking for a Mosrite, try the Hallmarks, which are closer to the Mosrite but with a few minor tweaks. The VM110 is its own animal, not everybody's gonna like it, but it suits me fine. If you like a bit of a crunchy or overdriven sound, it works well. Don't know the other models (VM65 etc) in the line, and can't say they're all that appealing.

I have an early (serial # 14) Wilson Bros. alder bodied VM-75, and it is a very decent guitar for what it cost...about $450, as I recall. I got it because it was a Ventures-endorsed guitar, not because it loosely resembles a Mosrite. I am a huge Ventures fan. But I gotta say, the darn thing sounds really good with some good flatwounds on it, and it stays in tune well. But I don't care for the wide, flat Les Paul-ish neck profile, so I don't play it very often anymore. Jazzmasters and Jaguars have spoiled (ruined?) me!

When the VM-110 first came out, I was interested in getting one because of the Jazzmaster/Jag-style vibrato, but upon further reflection I didn't think it was worth the price they were asking for it and I assumed it probably had the same neck profile as my VM-75. I believe all the VM-110's have basswood bodies, even the sunburst ones...someone correct me if I am wrong.

If I were in the market for a new VM-110, I'd spend the extra coin and get a Hallmark Custom 60, which is $899 with a very nice hard case. It appears to be a far superior instrument. I'm looking forward to seeing Eddie Katcher's as soon as it arrives.

Hey Woody, is that VM-75 the black one you had up for sale a while back?

I'm always looking for cheap guitars (because I can't justify expensive ones) and a couple of years ago I really wanted a Mosrite-ish knock off; the Wilson Bros. guitars were cool, the really low end being a Strat copy (who needs another one of those?) for $199, but then there's a big gap in the price point to the VM-50, which is what I would want (don't particularly care about the contoured body) but it's $399. The VM-65 is $499. I was going to buy Eddie's, but he never really cared for his and discouraged me from it. The only reason I want a VM-50 is to strip the bridge P-90 out and put in a Dimarzio so I can wear really tight jeans and pretend to be Johnny Ramone in my bedroom.

I called Wallace Reed's here in GA (our only Wilson Bros dealer) and he said that they don't really seem to be supporting the line anymore. They never call to try to sell him inventory and when he makes inquiries they have very limited color selections, usually only black or white.

Brian, my apologies for perpetuating the gear talk.

Hey, Richard,

Nope, the black one was a VM-65...I sold it last week, at Wallace's store. It had been there on consignment for about 6 months. Still have the VM-75, though. Interestingly, the two guitars had consecutive serial numbers (0014 and 0015)!

Wallace Reed is a good friend (I worked at his music store during the Christmas rush the past two weeks). Wallace says that Wilson Bros. support system is just awful. He tried to get some VM-110's when they first came out but they were "out of stock" per Tim Wilson, who is Don Wilson's brother. I just checked the WB website, and they are out of stock on several models, at least in certain colors.

Wallace has a white VM-65 (serial # 2) that he got at a NAMM show and signed by the Ventures that he keeps as a collector. He has tried to get a WB hard case for it ever since he became a Wilson Bros. dealer in 2004, and no dice. I eventually got a TKL Mosrite alligator case for mine that fits perfectly.

And remember, Eddie only likes white Fender Jazzmasters!
