Are Hawaiian shirts something that were worn by native Hawaiians or are they are complete product of pop culture, tourism, and the Hawaiian aesthetic.

I don't know the history off the top of my head, but I am sure that they had Material wraps with tropical prints on them that evolved into shirts with buttons. why do you detest them so much. I only hate cheap new ones. Jeff(bigtikidude) —Jeff(bigtikidude) |

Can't blame them for that, would it be better if they were wearing tight t-shirts with their bellies hanggin out? Jeff(bigtikidude) —Jeff(bigtikidude) |

Jeff, are any brands to look for in quality vintage hawaiian shirts? I like wearing them when occasion permits, which is not often. Most of my Samoan friends don't were them. I think there is a distinction between traditional polynesian culture and modern tiki culture, the latter being developed by the western culture's interest in Hawaii and the South Seas following WWII. Both have their merits, IMO. |

I reckon they're cool looking, cool to wear, hide 'the gut' and woman love em. Well, at least that's the theory I'm happiest with. |

There's a big difference between cool looking vintage shirts and ugly modern ones. |

I live in Hawaii and you wear Hawaiian print shirts most of the time here. Why? Heck i don't know...it's just something we all wear. Vintage shirts rule but the cheaper ones at Wal-Mart or whatever work too if that's all you have. "Locals" get cool print shirts from Hilo Hatties. The good ones are expensive. When i go to the mainland i don't wear 'em.....it doesn't seem right, but here, everybody wers 'em and it's just a part of living or visiting here. They're unique to Hawaii like kalua pig....or poi....or da kine. A lot of visitors think they are to cool to wear 'em, but if you live here, you wear 'em. If your not wearing a Hawaiin print shirt then most likely you're wearing a t-shirt with some logo on it. Hey, it's like summer here ALL THE TIME!! Right now it's a good 80-85 degrees and it's what...DECEMBER 11th!! The TakeOffs |

Several years ago the Textile Museum in Ludlow, MA (www.textilemuseum.org) held an exhibit of Hawaiian shirts. The local textile museum in Willimantic, CT followed "suit" by also displaying vintage Hawaiian shirts donated by myself and Mike Rosado from 9th Wave. 9th Wave played a fundraiser for the Willimantic museum in conjunction with the exhibit and raised quite a few dollars for a good cause. —Aloha, |

Yeah, but I doubt he wanted to wear that. —"as he stepped into the stealthy night air... little did he know the fire escape was not there" https://www.facebook.com/reluctantaquanauts/ |

After hits like "Blue Hawaii" and a few others, not even including the movies he made, and the killing he made from it, I'm sure Elvis had no problem wearin' an hawaiian shirt. I sure wouldn't............ Be careful following the masses. Sometimes the "M" is silent........................... |

If you want to get down to the nitty gritty Blue Hawaii was the reason why all his 60s movies were made up of women, beaches, cars, or airplanes to some sort. They kept trying to recreate the magic at the box office that Blue Hawaii had, but failed pretty much everytime. He hated those movies with passion... and all that stemmed from a...... you guessed it hawaiian shirt. In the words of the immortal philosopher Homer (Simpson, not the dead Greek guy) - "Thereâs only two kind of guys who wear those shirts: gay guys and big, fat party animals." I personally find that very offensive. NOT FUNNY. We don't want idiots like that here. Why do ya gotta go and offend someone with that crap? That's supposed to be funny? Come over here and say that and you'll wind up in a cane field all sore from the neck down. Zak.....DO NOT COME TO KAUAI. The TakeOffs |
