I thought it'd be kinda cool to start a thread on Christmas/holiday surf music - perhaps we can list favorites, or hidden gems that you have in your collection. I think many here will agree that the quintessential Christmas surf disc is the Ventures Christmas LP/CD. Other faves are the Los Straitjackets disc, the Happy Birthday Baby Jesus comp (not a lot of surf on it, just Man Or Astroman and The Bomboras, but I still like it). Moondawg also sent me a Christmas comp a while ago that I listen to every Christmas. I'm sure with more thought I'll have more to add (I've got a total of about 3000 Christmas songs in iTunes, not all surf obviously).

Aside from aforementioned usuals, i really enjoy the Henry Mancini album 'A merry Mancini Christmas'. Hits the spot, that one. Very Happy

This doesn't have anything directly to do with surf, but Chet Atkins' Christmas album is staggering. Side A is Chet on that magnificient Grestch with his stunning clear tone most of us will never be able to achieve. Side B is Chet on nylon classic playing mostly Christmas carols. As can be expected, the production is classic early '60s Nashville/RCA. If you think you really have command of the electric guitar, check it out.....It will humble you. ed

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

This has something to do with surf...check out Paul Johnson's (Mr. Moto, Duo-tones, The Belairs) Christmas Guitars CD. It's not surf style but, he plays some of the classic christmas tunes with acoustic guitars only. Very, very nice stuff. One of my favourites at this time of the year...

Absolutely. One of THE best Christmas albums ever, but I'm a major Manicini freak.

The Blue Hawaiians "Christmas on Big Island"
The Urban Surf Kings "Snowman Rumble"
The Pyronauts "A Surfin Christmas"
and of course the Seasonal Favorites Vol. 1 and 2
by double crown records

and I have many more thats just off the top of my head.

eddie... which Atkins album are you speaking about? Is it "Christmas with Chet Atkins" or "East Tennessee Christmas"?

To answer the original post, I really enjoy..
1. The Ventures Christmas Album
2 Spotnicks - Spotnicks in Wonderland
3. The Beach Boys Christmas Album
4. Los Straitjackets -Tis the Season

Really don't like Xmas music that much, but love (and this sure aint no surf) Phil Spector's A Christmas Gift For You, a classic...its played at casa surfraptor on Christmas morning for years now

There's two Christmas records by Lost Acapulco, they're both awesome. The Volcanos' version of Jingle Bells and The Bomboras' version of Little Drummer Boy are two of my favorite Christmas song versions.

Check out Davie Allan & the Arrows' "Fuzz for the Holidays" volumes
1 & 2. They both rock with very clever arrangements and gnarly
but beautiful fuzzed out guitar. Davie Allan rules!
Rock

I also dig the already mentioned Los Straitjackets, Urban Surf
Kings, Blue Hawaiians, Pyronauts, & Ventures Christmas CD's,
and of course the Royal Crown "Seasonal Favorites" Volunes 1 & 2.

For instrumental acoustic guitar Christmas CD's, my hands-down
favorites are the two Christmas CD's by Lewis Ross, "A Collection
of Favourite Christmas Carols, and "Songs, Hymns and Carols".
These CD's are so stunningly beautiful, and so well played that I
could listen to them all year long. Rick Ruskin guests on the second
one. They're not easy to find, but well worth hunting-down.

Other acoustic guitar CD's that I like are the two by Ed Gerhard,
and CD's by Dan Crary, Laurence Juber, Doug Smith, and Paul
Johnson's "Christmas Guitars".

I'm with Sean..."Happy Birthday Baby Jesus" splits time with The Ventures in my player during the seasons. I love that comp.

One I like not mentioned yet is the 1963 "A Surfer's Christmas List" by the Surfaris. Originally only released as a single but was later also included on a now out of print V/A comp called Rockin' Little Christmas.

Though it's not surf (well, some of it is close, IMHO), Brian Setzer's Christmas Album (with BSO) has become one of my all time favorites.

2 would be Elvis'.

I'll have to check out Mancini and TheVenture's Christmas stuff.

I like the Ventures one very much. Maybe one hears it in my free christmas track?

I downloaded Astroman's "Frosty the Snowman" from iTunes. I think that whole CD is available on there.

I think I listen to the first Ventures Christmas album every day during December. I just can't get enough of it.

Sean

Yeah, iTunes has it, but it's nearly $20. However, you have the option of previewing the tunes and buying just the ones you want.

my Favorite x-mas cd is
The Blue Hawaiians "Christmas on Big Island"
here is a link to buy or listen to clips.

perfect mix of x-mas tunes, Hawaiian and or Exotica, and Surf

Jeff(bigtikidude)

This is goofy but it cracks me up just the same. Check out The Crossfires Christmas tune "Santa and the Sidewalk Surfer". The ultimate gremmie X-Mas list circa 1963.
