I have to disagree with this sentiment...I don't think there can ever be enough covers of Miserlou and Squad Car out there...

Zak, I'd love to hear your review of my CD of almost all covers. I included some regulars like Mr. Moto and Baja because it was really intended as a souvenir for those in the crowd that don't hear surf music often, or ever. I'd never try to sell one to a real surf music enthusiast, that will be the next one.

For the most part, the modern versions of those standards that stick out the most to me are the ones where the band/artist takes a really creative approach, rather than just doing a rote interpretation of the normal arrangement. Ape did a really neat Polynesian/exotica version of "Misirlou," and the Tiki Tiki Bamboos (probably forgot an 'o' or three in there) did something along similar lines, though they slowed it waaaaaay down. Those versions grabbed my attention much quicker than almost any of the billion non-DD versions of that tune floating around out there.

I really like the Windows startup disc.

No, I thoroughly enjoy the Windows and it was really cool to email them and receive it in the mail, especially since they aren't already rich rockstars like Radiohead.

if a band can't come up with good original material they should at least try to dig up some covers that haven't been done a million times by a million other bands. It's the kind of repertoire that makes me immediately hit the "skip" button on the player unless it is a truly outstanding version, and there are very few of those out there. I just don't see the point of putting that kind of "Greatest Hits" fare on a CD.

I totally agree. I don't want to hear rehashes that pale compared to the
originals, unless it's done with a really unique and original arrangement.
I get way more excitement out of hearing a really good new tune, or an
obscure cover than hearing stuff that I've heard a gazillion times before:
no matter how good the familiar tunes are. But I know that I'm in the minority
on this.

Yeah, I've heard these guys before and I think they're pretty good. I usually like Japanese instro/surf/garage/rock&roll bands. Also from Japan there's the Twinkle Arrows and the Whys, a couple of great bands, at least in my opinion.

While I don't think these guys brought too much to their covers, I think they really managed to get a great lo-fi sound. Their cover of Bombora has an AMAZING guitar sound, but they simplify the drums. NOBODY can get that song right
