I always go to the Fort Meyers area, I usually go to Sanibel Island. I taught Hiigh School in Fort Meyers over 20 years ago. My parents live in North Fort Meyers.

I figure if people know about the shows then they might actually come out to them...
I saw on Tiki Central that you were diggin' on the new Haole Kats tune...
I can't wait to hear their new surf stuff...
We played with them at Hukilau last year, and we were supposed to play with them at Trader Vic's in Atlanta back in April but had a scheduling conflict... They are a great bunch of guys... They will be playing at Hukilau 2006 with us in October... So hop on a plane and come check out the east coast...

Believe me if money was no issue I'd be there in a heart beat.
I'd really like to travel around and see some differnt areas, and surf/exotica bands.
Guess I should start playing the lotto, huh??
then I'd video the events and do a show liki John Ratzenberuger's
made in america road trip type of deal.

again incredible work Fez, you are an inspiration. That's kinda what I'd like to do with all the So. Cal. Bands. But being that there is like 50 or so. It's kinda overwhelming.
How do you like the Haole Cats?
I've heard a bit of their stuff and want to get their cds

The Haole Kats... also known as The Wholly Cats... have 3 cd's available on their website... (one as the Wholly Kats and 2 as the Haole Kats)
none of the cd's are surf... mostly Hawaiian music...
They are recording a surf album right now that should be out soon...

As for my opinion of The Haole Kats... They are great... especially if you are into the tiki vibe... All of the members are excellent musicians... They have to be because they don't have day jobs... and they are very versitile which serves them well for playing different environments... I really can't wait to hear the new surf album...

Thanks for the INfo Fez, I heard a clip of the new surf stuff on Tiki Central, it was surfy, but very mellow, and laid back, a good thing sometimes.

For only being just a handful of bands, you guys are doin a great job of representing surf in Florida. I remeber 5 or so years back that
everybody on cowabunga was saying that besides the Thrusters and Balboas, there was no surf down that way.

Thanks again Big Tiki Dude... and sorry to The Thrusters... I forgot to check their show dates... That's what happens when you try to do stuff in a hurry... I'll make sure that they are on my next post...
I heard you call in on Clint's show last week giving the upcoming surf show advisory... good work...
We had several people at our show the other night that had never seen a surf band before... Some of them read about the show in the newspaper... others just seemed to be walking by the club... or at the coffee house on the other side of the building... several of them seemed to be blown away by the show... or maybe they were just Intoxicated... or both... Ha!
Anyway, there are lots of good bands in Florida... So I'll keep posting their shows...

Fez, what part of florida do you live in? I may be relocating soon. I am also going to be around orlando for 2 weeks in july, so maybe i will try and catch some of these gigs.

I'm in Tallahassee, FL... Way up in North Central Florida close to halfway between Pensacola and Jacksonville...
It's a little over a 4 hour drive from here to Orlando...
Your best bet for a surf band in Orlando would be The Nova Rays...
They don't have any July dates posted yet... I'll let you know if they do...
Other than that...
West of Orlando (about 2 hours driving time) in Tampa you could probably catch shows from The Thrusters, The Haole Kats, or The Vodkanauts...
Southeast of Orlando (about 2 hours driving time) you can probably catch The Cavefish or The Dillengers...

If I do move down there what are the odds you think of me finding some surf musicians in their 20's? I am thinking about relocating to either Sarasota or Fort Myers, possibly Fort Lauderdale, because my girlfriend has a really good job opportunity there.

The vibe is around... You just have to look for it...
I know that Sarasota has New College... You might try putting up some fliers there if that's where you end up...
The West Palm/Ft Lauderdale area has lots of people that are into rockabilly/surf/50's/tiki stuff...
Most importantly... Go to some shows and talk to people... I'm sure that you will find something close to what you are looking for...
Oh... The Jetsetter Lounge in Lake Worth (near West Palm) would be a great place to network for this... ask around...

I wish I could tell you more about the scene in Sarasota/Ft Myers - but to be honest, there's not a whole lot going on there aside from a small rockabilly scene (the only two bands that spring to mind are the Psycho DeVilles, who have since moved to GA, and the Downshifters, both rockabilly acts). Tampa might have somewhat better pickins' and it's not thatfar away from Sarasota(not around the corner, either).
Fort Lauderdale might be ideal though, if that's the locale you wind up with. I totally agree with Fez about The Jetsetter (about 45 mins north of Liquordale) - the place only books surf, rockabilly, garage and recently ska bands. Seems to me to be a good place to start as any. In any case, it's better than lurking around a Sam Ash waiting for someone to break into a surf jam while trying out an amp...
Then again - what do I know? I live in the sticks and found a band here purely by accident.

OK here's the latest Florida surf show update...
Shows with a * next to them are shows by a Florida band outside of Florida... The Haole Kats will be venturing up to Illinois/Wisconsin/Indiana in August... Go check them out... they are a great bunch of guys...
