so im thinking of getting a customized guitar made by fat dawg here in berkeley. has anybody ever worked with the guy on a guitar?
http://www.fatdawg.com/
i made a trip there last week and he said he could customize one for me for less than 500 bucks depending on the pick ups ,whammy, and neck that i wanted. he also sells vintage jags and mustangs, listed on his site but not pictured. what do u guys think?

sorry can't help on this one.
But $500.00 seems pretty cheap for a custom guitar.

i think the mission statement under the custom guitars link is pretty cool.
hodge-podging parts together to make something that is YOURS for 500 bucks? heck yes!
seems cool, but there is always the chance you get a squier neck with a plywood body.
stil, i say go for it if you can have a hand in the shapes, feel, etc you might get.

I know Fat dawg and I know subway guitars, it's right up the street from me. $500 to me seems like a lot of money for one of his guitars. His idea of custom is finding a bunch of old parts and putting them together for you. It'll be unique, that's for sure. If you're into LoFi surf/punk then I'd say consider it, otherwise save up a few more hundred bucks and buy a quality guitar off Craigslist.

OT hey! what's wrong with a plywood body-squier neck guitar?!!!??? esp. if you throw in a "WOWIE ZOWIE-a-plywood-body-with-squier-neck-guitar!-Bitchin!" face
seriously, if anyone can a custom for $500 it's not gonna have good parts, or he's cutting you a special deal.

Congrats MrReverb, shore is pretty. Before you buy an amp you can check out Mel's and my amps to hear some options. Check out Wooza's recent thread on buying a first surf amp.

Nice looking guitar!
I, too, have met FatDawg and used to go in there all the time while I went to Cal. What a trip! If possible, I agree with both Danny and Zak.
What he is selling, besides guitars, is a hefty portion of prose and myth. The guitars are what they are, and are often described in the most deprecating terms possible. The real question, then, is if this entertainment has value. Maybe?
But, to his credit, he has weathered the storm for a long, long time and is still running a viable enterprise. I would venture a guess that he will still be in business long after Guitar Center shutters. That is, if disgruntled customers or some bad mushrooms don't kill him first.

Is that what a poly finish of Shoreline looks like? I really hate the nitro color they are passing off as Shoreline.

Fat Dawg will treat you well, but only if your first name is "Ryland" and your last name is "Cooder" haha!

I visited Subway guitars several times when I lived in Northern California. the place was pretty much a jumbled mess of guitars in various states of condition laying around or cowded together in racks on the wall. The whole place was pretty offbeat and eccentric--a little like FatDawg (and Berkeley itself, for that matter.)
Lots of cobbled together looking stuff. I really like original Danelectros, and didn't care for his philosophy that they were essentially junky and needed upgrades and so changed things to push/pull pots, sperzel tuners, mixed and matched parts, etc. I mean, he essentially came into a huge inventory of original Danelectro new/old stock necks and bodies, etc. and then he makes all these frankenstein guitars out of them. Was that the best that could be done with what he had to work with?

Well, i gotta jump in here. I know Fat Dawg and i've been in his shop MANY times and he's an ok guy......i mean he's the Danelectro "guy" for cryin' out loud so don't go in there to buy a "real" guitar! The place is "off beat and eccentric" and that's what i always loved about hangin' out in there back in the day when i lived in Berkeley. He's got all kinds of stuff everywhere and it aint no Guitar Center that's for sure but it's a neat place to snoop around for "unusual" guitar parts and stuff. The Psychotic Pineapple, the Dunbars, The Shakers, Greg Kihn, Jonathan Richmond, Earthquake, The Fabulous Titans, Chris Solberg we all used to hang out in there from time to time and marvel at his Dani collection and that old car in front with the clouds painted on it......it used to be a cool hang out for local musicians. He put a brass bridge on one of my Danis and it stayed in tune a lot better but i wish i hadn't done that now cause my guitar is not all original anymore but take it easy on the guy......he's a wacky guy living in a wacky city and has seen it all through the years. I say go there if you get a chance. It's a fun place and will remind you of your friends' messy room only it's all guitar stuff instead of old socks and dirty clothes. I admire him for that. It's not a crime to be different.....it's kinda cool. So pick on someone else, Fat Dawg's OK!!

haha, now THAT'S the metaphor I was trying to think of.
I also didn't want "offbeat and eccentric" to come across as a put down. Heck, those words describe alot of the music and instruments we love and talk about so much here . . . practically a badge of honor. The whole vibe of the place is one reason people should visit Subway if they get a chance.
