Oh, I just found a September 2013 email conversation I had with Tom Wheeler. He asked me about the famous surfer with a Jaguar ad. I pointed him at this thread, which probably led him to Randy Nauert. I didn't remember this at all as it was just 2 short emails.

That makes sense. There were a few outtakes of that Fender surfer photo session included in the book, in the chapter on Bob Perine's ad campaign.
It was really interesting to see how big of a fan of the company Perine really was. This was not just a job for him - he was also an accomplished jazz guitarist, and he deeply loved Fender guitars (in particular Jazzmasters) and amps. This passage by Ned Jacoby, his business partner, was really sad:
But CBS spelled the end of it for us. Bob contined to work with Fender for a while, but it played out just as we feared. The new, inept CBS regime destroyed what would have been a great thing for Bob and for Fender as well. Bob was a tremendously hard worker and had put a lot of himself into the Fender account. Its loss took a terrible toll on him. He had been so happy with that account and had put his whole life into it.

I've been reading Bob Katz's book.
Some of it is certainly over my head, but there is a lot of good info. If I never master, at least I can have a conversation with a mastering engineer, and have an inkling about some of the process.

Excellent. I can't recommend it and the second in the series, The Wise Man's Fear, highly enough. Our whole family is awaiting book three with great anticipation. Fantastic storytelling!

Virgil Thomson - Music Chronicles
A collection of reviews and other short articles.
This bloke knows his music and writes very well, it's a very easy read. A good sense of humour as well

I just got my copy a few days ago and all I can say is wow! It's everything Ivan said and jam-packed with info, pics, and cool stuff. I got it on Amazon for 25 bucks and at that price it's a steal. Along with John Blair's book, I'd say this is another "must-have" for any Fender fan.

Now in the middle of the 2nd of 6 books, Darkness Descending.

Must be something in the air; I just ordered this because, oddly, my local shop didn't have one and they usually have one of everything by Wheeler. Looking forward to it.

Today. Phenomenal work! Got a kick out of 2 guys (including the owner) at my local shop in the Acknowledgements, as well as seeing John Blair in there and... wait for it...
